Camino Primitivo

The Camino Primitivo continues via Bacurín and San Pedro de Mera to San Román da Retorta. On the way to Crecente, it follows practically the entire route of the LU-P-2901 road. Culture and History

The Church of San Pedro de Mera is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture in Galicia. It was built in the 12th century. Its exterior is characterised by a simple façade and well-preserved stonework. Original architectural elements have been preserved inside, including capitals with vegetal and geometric motifs. Restoration work has preserved its historic character. The church is an attraction for those interested in medieval art and religious history. For historic churches, current opening hours are part of the usual daily planning; they should be checked in advance before a visit.

San Pedro de Mera is part of the Terras de Auga e Cultura programme. The routes there pass through parishes marked with tourist signage. The signage was implemented by the Ayuntamiento de Lugo and funded by the Agencia de Turismo de Galicia. For routes with tourist signage, it is advisable to check the current route once again before setting out.

In Taboeiro lies Os Castros, also known as Castro de Taboeiro, an archaeological settlement. In Hospital is Casa do Hospital e de Audiencia, which bears the name Hospital. In San Pedro de Arriba there is a hórreo designated “Hórreo 1”.

The history of San Pedro de Mera also includes an important pilgrims’ hospital. The church of the parish of San Pedro de Mera is already mentioned in an 11th-century reference. Alongside its Romanesque architectural history, this also connects the place with its former importance in pilgrimage traditions.
