Estelo – Hiking, Mountain Biking and Culture

Nature

The Senda del Río Eo is an easy 5 km circular route connecting A Veiga, also known as Vegadeo, Miou and Louteiro, with an estimated maximum duration of three hours. Its route includes a natural viewpoint, a wooden walkway leading to a landing stage, and a riverside recreation area with benches and tables.

The Senda del Río Eo leads to the protected Eo estuary, which is designated as a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area for Birds. Along the banks of the Eo, the Ruta del Estraperlo also follows a route formerly used by pilgrims on the Way of Saint James and smugglers to transport goods between Galicia and Asturias.

The Ruta del Mazo de Meredo passes through a eucalyptus forest interspersed with native plants such as chestnut trees, holly and laurels, as well as numerous streams. In Monticelo, in the parish of Paramios, around 12 km from Vegadeo, the Área recreativa Cristo de Paramios offers views of the mountain landscape.

The Ruta Vegadeo–Vegadeo mountain biking route is 26.089 km long, has 950.94 m of cumulative ascent and reaches a maximum elevation of 318.82 m. It uses a combination of wide paths and local roads and is considered easy to ride. Files in PDF, KML, PLT and WPT formats are available for the route; it is intended for mountain bikes or BTT.

On the Ruta Vegadeo–Vegadeo, an uphill section leads towards Estelo; at this point on the route, it covers a distance of 778 m and an elevation gain of 28 m. A moderately difficult mountain biking route from Tapia de Casariego to Puerto de la Garganta passes through Estelo via the Ermita de San Bartolomé and then climbs to the 306 m-high Collado de Ferreirameón.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Esteban de Piantón is a church dating from the 16th to the 17th century, with Baroque religious art and works by local artisans from the 19th century. Semana Santa in Piantón has a tradition dating back to 1758 and more than 250 years of history; the procession figures include Christ praying in the Garden, Ecce Homo, the reclining Christ, San Juan, the Nazareno, La Dolorosa and La Verónica.

In the municipality of Vegadeo, the Mazo de Meredo and its mill illustrate the tradition of ironworking and the former use of hydropower; a recreation area is located next to them. The Senda artística de los 12 puentes currently comprises seven sculptures.

The Ermita de San Bartolomé is designated in Vegadeo as religious cultural heritage and as a hermitage.

Geographical Location

Bus route 074-012 from Puentenuevo to IES Elisa y Luis Villamil has two stops in the Estelo area within the municipality of Vegadeo: Ferreiramión and Ferreirameón. The municipality of Vegadeo also has a 1.07 km-long road connection named Puente de Ferreiramerón–Estelo–Las Cruces.
