Lugo: Roman Walls, Museums and Parque do Miño

The Roman Walls of Lugo date from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. This precise date makes Lugo’s historical legacy immediately tangible and gives the introduction a clear chronological reference.

Culture

The Museo Provincial de Lugo moved to its current premises in 1957. These consist of the rooms of the former Franciscan monastery of San Francisco and a new building designed by Manuel Gómez Román. The museum premises therefore comprise two clearly identified architectural elements: the rooms of the former monastery and the purpose-built new building.

The Casa de los Mosaicos preserves the remains of a domus from the late 3rd or early 4th century on site. The date is deliberately given as a timeframe between the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. Beneath the edge of one of the dwelling’s dining rooms, the Casa de los Mosaicos has a hypocaust, a heating system that uses warm air.

By the Miño

The Parque do Miño is a riverside path in Lugo on the left bank of the Miño. Its location by the river and its classification as a riverside path describe the site just as specifically as its position on the left bank. The circular route in Parque do Miño includes a pedestrian area and a cycle path. Those exploring the route on foot or by bicycle will find two explicitly designated areas within the same circular route.

Festivals

The Festas de San Froilán in Lugo have been celebrated since 1754. The festival tradition is therefore defined chronologically by a specific year. The second Sunday of the Festas de San Froilán is called “O Domingo das Mozas” and is dedicated to traditional dress and Galician folklore. This Sunday’s distinct name is part of the festival, as are the two cultural focuses mentioned.

The Festas de San Froilán end with a medieval fair in the Plaza de la Catedral and around the Roman city walls.
