Coast and Nature

A Laracha is home to Praia de Caión, a beach approximately 850 metres long. It is divided into four areas: As Salseiras, O Cárcere Vello, O Caracoleiro and A Arnela. These four named sections give the coast of Caión a clearly recognisable structure, while the total length remains an approximate figure.

The cliffs along the coast of Caión are home to a breeding colony of European shags. They also serve this species as various resting and feeding areas. The Paseo Marítimo de Caión has been awarded the “Sendero Azul” distinction. Continuing westwards, the promenade extends into the surroundings of Baldaio beach and lagoon. In its western continuation, the coastal path thus connects the beach area with the surroundings of Baldaio lagoon.

Trails by the Water

The Ruta dos muíños offers two variants. The shorter route ends in Gabenlle, while the longer one continues to Caión. For planning your own route, the Gabenlle variant is described directly with its length and difficulty level: it is 7.9 km long and has a medium to low difficulty level. Its starting point lies within the Río Acheiro catchment area. For most of its length, it follows the riverside promenade along the Río Anllóns to the Gabenlle recreational area. The route thus connects its starting point in the Río Acheiro catchment area with the recreational area on the Río Anllóns; the riverside promenade shapes most of its course.

The Gabenlle recreational area has a riverside beach. The Río Anllóns separates its two sections, which are connected by pedestrian bridges. The two beach areas are therefore separated by the river, while the bridges provide a connection for pedestrians.

Getting There and Information

A Laracha can be reached via the AG-55 or the C-552 road between A Coruña and Fisterra.

The A Laracha tourist information office is located in the emblematic building of the former Casa Reitoral de Caión. It is next to Plaza Eduardo Vila Fano and directly beside the parish church of Nosa Señora do Socorro.

History and Tradition

A permanent exhibition explores the history of Caión through its fishing activities. It covers the period from the former whalers to the heyday of fishing in the 20th century. The exhibition’s chronological scope therefore extends from the former whaling tradition to the later development of fishing in the 20th century.

Marco da Anta is one of the very few documented menhirs in A Costa da Morte. The Romería dos Milagres de Caión takes place every year on 8 September.

Local Life

The town’s traditional market takes place on the first and third Sunday of every month. It has more than 500 stalls. Various goods are sold at the market, including Galician food products, clothing, shoes and flowers in particular. Alongside Galician food products, clothing, shoes and flowers are therefore also part of the range of goods offered at this regularly held market.

Praia de Caión has hosted competitions in international surfing championships.
