Valencia del Mombuey – Nature Trails, Dehesa and Historical Traces

Valencia del Mombuey holds two Starlight certifications and is suitable for tourist stargazing. The landscape of Valencia del Mombuey is characterised by Mediterranean woodland, most of which is managed as dehesa. Tamujo, oleander and blackberries grow along the riverbanks around Valencia del Mombuey. On its municipal land, Valencia del Mombuey participates in a strategy to preserve and safeguard the habitat of the cinereous vulture. The town is one of the 13 cross-border municipalities in the southwest of Extremadura around La Alqueva, the largest artificial lake in Western Europe.

The combination of dehesa, riparian vegetation, cinereous vulture conservation and a certified night sky gives Valencia del Mombuey several clearly distinguishable nature themes that can be considered separately when planning a trip.

The PR-BA 120 “El Ardila Transfronterizo” is a guided and signposted PR-type nature route in Valencia del Mombuey. It is 32.3 km long and runs as either a linear route or a circular trail. It is associated with an environmental interpretation centre located next to the Ermita de San Benito.

The PR-BA 121 “Las Fuentes del Zaos” follows the Arroyo Zaos through riparian vegetation consisting of oleander, blackberries, broom, mastic shrubs and tamujo. The route leads to the old Colmenar de Caprales, a historic stone construction. The “Ruta de los Molinos del Ardila” leads to the two well-preserved watermills, Molino de las Dos Piedras and Molino de la Junta, following the bank of the Ardila River for approximately 3 km.

Culture and History

The “Letreros de Nijata” are warlike paintings with numerous depictions engraved in stone and are reminiscent of a Celtic settlement dating from 3500 BC. The “Piedras Pinchas” dolmen consists of five vertical red-granite orthostats.

Inside the Iglesia Purísima Concepción, the area at the head of the church space is notable for its ribbed vault and striking decorative paintings. The Centro de Interpretación de las Brujas is a nature interpretation centre on the banks of the Ardila River, near the Castillo de Noudar, in a landscape with valuable pine stands.
