Culture and Granite
Quintana de la Serena can be explored through its granite, sacred buildings and clearly defined routes through the landscape. The Museo del Granito presents the history of granite quarrying in Quintana de la Serena. A self-guided tour leads through information panels, tools and photographic exhibitions. The museum reopened with a completely renewed, more educational, interactive, immersive and accessible museum design.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Milagros dates from the late 15th century. It was commissioned by Juan de Zúñiga, the last master of the Order of Alcántara. Outside the town lies the Ermita de los Mártires, which dates from the 17th century. The roundabouts and promenades of Quintana de la Serena also feature an open-air exhibition of sculptures by stonemasons from Quintana, made from Gris Quintana granite.
Another cultural site is the Pinturas esquemáticas de San José. They are located in a quartzite cavity and depict human figures in a procession. Sacred architecture, craftsmanship and prehistoric depictions therefore stand side by side in different forms, without the individual sites being reduced to a single theme.
History
The former inn that houses the Museo del Granito is considered one of the finest examples of aristocratic residential architecture in the La Serena comarca. It is thought to have been built between the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century. In the surroundings of Quintana de la Serena, Hijovejo forms part of a monument marking the transition to the complete Romanisation of La Serena. It is dated from the end of the 2nd century BC to the end of the 1st century.
Nature and Trails
The SL-BA 74 Cañada Segoviana de Hijovejo begins in the centre of Quintana de la Serena, next to the Iglesia de los Milagros. The 8.4-kilometre route is a linear local hiking trail with an outward and return journey in Quintana de la Serena. It passes through a semi-steppe landscape with scattered stands of holm oaks, olive groves and vineyards.
This provides two different formats for planning your day: an indoor cultural tour and an outdoor activity. The trail length, linear route and character of the museum provide specific points of reference if you would like to compare sightseeing and exercise in terms of time.
