In Alcanar, the view reaches far back into history: Moleta del Remei is an important Early Iron Age settlement and subsequently a long-lasting Iberian settlement that was continuously inhabited from the 7th to the 2nd century BC. The Moleta del Remei archaeological site is part of the Ruta dels Ibers.
Culture
Casa O’Connor is a Modernist mansion and houses the Centre d’Interpretació de la Cultura dels Ibers. Original archaeological materials from Sant Jaume – Mas d’en Serrà and Moleta del Remei are displayed there. The preserved building and wall decoration of Casa O’Connor are an outstanding example of Modernisme.
The cultural remains represent different historical layers: Moleta del Remei stands for a long history of settlement, Casa O’Connor for Modernisme and archaeological interpretation, Sant Miquel for religious architecture with an older predecessor, and the Cisterna del Vall for historical water storage. The sites can therefore be viewed according to their different themes.
The Església de Sant Miquel is Alcanar’s Catholic parish church; it was built to replace an older church building documented since 1363. It has a Renaissance portal with a rose window above it. The Cisterna del Vall is a structure dating from 1600 that could store up to 1,200,000 litres of water. The remains of the Civil War defences along the coast of Les Cases d’Alcanar and at various points in the Serra del Montsià are marked with information boards.
Further exploration also includes the subordinate locality page Les Cases D'alcanar. More locality pages: Vimbodí, Gratallops, Vespella De Gaià, L'eucaliptus, Colldejou, Marçà, Miravet.
Routes
Alcanar has the Pujada a la Cogula nature route for hikers and walkers. Also in Alcanar, the Circuit eco-turístic de l’Estanyet a Sòl de Riu is a green coastal path. For planning a day, a nature route and a green coastal path can be considered side by side as different focal points.
Geographical setting
Near Alcanar lies Platja del Marjal, a beach. In the surrounding area of Alcanar are Playa El Pinar, a beach, Pequeplaya, a beach, and Playa Cementera, a beach.
The Pintures Rupestres d'Ulldecona archaeological site is also located in the vicinity of Alcanar. Also in the surrounding area are Església Nova, a museum, the Ruïnes del Convent de Sant Francesc, ruins, and the Museu de la Mar de l'Ebre, a museum.
Cuisine
Between November and December, you can enjoy the Jornades Gastronòmiques dels Cítrics in Alcanar. Restaurants belonging to the local gastronomic club prepare special menus featuring citrus fruits as the main ingredient during the clementine season. The specified period links the culinary theme to a clearly defined seasonal occasion.
