Discover Roquetes: Nature, Culture and Holiday Apartments

In the Cova Avellanes area, Roquetes is home to a nature centre housed in a former forestry lodge. The municipal facility has several rooms and services and is used for lectures and environmental education activities.

Nature

The Barranc de Lloret and its tributaries, Pegunter, Orió and Barretes, are characterised by high rock walls, deep gorges, rock overhangs and unusual geological formations. Cova Pintada is a large cave with a waterfall, stalactites, stalagmites and a wide variety of colours.

The visitor centre features an interpretive exhibition on the geological history of Els Ports, as well as its waterways, rocks and fossils.

Hiking

From Roquetes, the Cova Avellanes area in Els Ports can be reached via Carrer del Caragol and, after the Portell viewpoint, the access road. At the start of the path to Cova Avellanes, Roquetes has a designated car park for the Cova Avellanes – Marturi – Tres Pins – Fageda de Serrassoles – Clots de Pastor route.

The Cova Avellanes – Marturi – Tres Pins – Fageda de Serrassoles – Clots de Pastor circular hike takes approximately 4 hours and 46 minutes, is 11.57 km long and has a moderate difficulty level.

The Vall Caramella – Vall d’en Pastor circular hike passes through the spectacular landscape of the Barranc de la Caramella gorge and Vall d’en Pastor, is 8.96 km long and has a moderate difficulty level.

The Racó del Moro route is one of the easier routes and ends at a pool of clear water.

Culture

The Observatori de l’Ebre was founded in 1904 and is a pioneering geoscience research centre in Roquetes, in Baix Ebre, combining scientific observation with advanced research, outreach and the preservation of its heritage.

On one Sunday each month, the Observatori de l’Ebre offers individual guided tours. They include the seismological, meteorological and astronomical pavilions.

La Lira Roquetense was founded in 1907 as a workers’, educational and mutual aid society; the current building dates from 1912.

Tradicionàrius de les Terres de l’Ebre takes place on the last weekend of August and brings together important traditional music groups from the Països Catalans; the festival showcases the culture, customs and gastronomy of Terres de l’Ebre.

Other places to research are Farena, Botarell, Arbolí, Alcanar, Bellmunt del Priorat, Els Guiamets, Mont-ral and Sarral.

Views and Trails

The viewpoint on 1,441-metre-high Caro offers views of the interior of the massif and the lower section of the Ebro Valley. It has interpretive signage and is adapted for people with reduced mobility.

The route along the former Val de Zafan railway line connected Aragón and Tortosa. The approximately 2-km section between Roquetes and Tortosa is lit, more than 4 m wide and equipped with a comfortable surface for cycling and walking.
