Vilamaniscle: Albera Nature, Vineyards and GR-11

Nature and Landscape

The Paratge Natural de l’Albera nature reserve surrounds Vilamaniscle. Protected Albera tortoises live in the municipality. Roe deer, badgers, foxes and wild boar can also frequently be observed. The town centre is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and cork oak and pine forests. This creates a varied landscape in which protected wildlife, cultivated areas and different types of woodland lie closely alongside one another. The combination of vineyards, olive groves and woodland shapes the character of the surroundings just as much as the wildlife of the Albera. Cork oaks and pines form distinct landscapes alongside the open areas of the vineyards and olive groves.

Hiking and Views

The GR-11 long-distance hiking trail passes through the town centre of Vilamaniscle. Another specific route leads to the Mirador del Suro Gros viewpoint. The ascent begins at Plaça Major, follows Carrer de Lluís Pagès and Carrer del Nord to the end, and then continues along a rural path. From the viewpoint, there are views towards Costabona, Coll del Pertús, Montagut and Serra de Malbosc. Vineyards, pine forests, shrubland, dry grasslands and montane meadows can also be seen. The route therefore connects the start at Plaça Major, the streets in the town centre and the subsequent rural path with the landscape around the Mirador del Suro Gros. When hiking, it is advisable to check the current trail conditions before setting out. For planning purposes, the specific starting point and the sequence of the streets mentioned are also important reference points along the route.

Church and Castle

The Església de Sant Gil is located about 200 metres south of the town centre of Vilamaniscle. It can be reached from Plaça Major via a paved path. The Castell de Vilamaniscle has new lighting that highlights its heritage value and makes it possible to experience it at night as well. The church and castle form part of different moments in a tour of the townscape: the church is located south of the town centre, while the castle remains visible in the evening hours thanks to its lighting. Current opening hours for the church should be checked before visiting.

Wine and Jazzejada

Celler Mas Pòlit is a family-run winery in the Albera landscape. The winery cultivates mountain vineyards on slate soils. Here, winegrowing is evident both in the landscape and in the combination of mountain locations and slate soils at Celler Mas Pòlit. The terms family-run winery, mountain vineyards and slate soils describe specific components of winegrowing around Vilamaniscle.

The Jazzejada is once again taking place in Vilamaniscle as a festival of jazz and wine. For events, it is advisable to check the current festival dates and event times before travelling. Jazz and wine provide the festival’s two explicitly stated focuses, while the vineyards and winery complement the local connection with wine in the landscape.
