Culture and History

Vilajuïga is home to the Església de Sant Feliu. The church is Romanesque and, based on its features, may date back to the mid-11th century. It has been included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.

The Ruta Megalítica passes through the megalithic complex of Coma d’Infern. This complex dates from between the 4th and 2nd millennia BC. It includes a remarkable group of megalithic tombs. The largest megalith in the municipality of Vilajuïga lies in a depression in a non-dominant position. Its location is considered exceptional.

Vilajuïga mineral water was recognised as mineromedicinal water in July 1904.

Routes and Paths

A circular route around Puig Castellar is designated as family-friendly. It begins and ends at the information point of Cap de Creus Natural Park in Vilajuïga.

For this route, the start and finish are at the same information point. The circular format therefore describes not only the route but also the designated starting and finishing point. The route types of the other two paths are also clearly specified: the Ruta del Vi is a circular route that returns to its starting point, while the path to Castell de Quermançó is not designed as a circuit. This preserves the different route types in the description.

The Ruta del Vi is an easy circular route. It is 3.31 kilometres long, with an estimated duration of 1.5 to 2 hours. Another easy route leads to Castell de Quermançó. This route is not a circuit, is 2.25 kilometres long and has an estimated duration of 1 to 1.5 hours.

Wine and Landscape

Vineyards and olive groves continue to dominate the western part of the municipality of Vilajuïga. The Ruta del Vi leads to several places in Vilajuïga associated with wine production or winemaking. Viticulture is a traditional agricultural activity in the town and throughout the Empordà region.

At Celler Espelt, the Ruta del Vi includes vineyards as well as facilities for winemaking and ageing. A tasting of various wines produced there is then scheduled.

At Celler Espelt, the route is also connected to specific stages of winemaking. The vineyards, winemaking and ageing are linked there in the same context as the subsequent tasting. The visit therefore leads from the agricultural foundation through processing to the wines produced.

Train Station and Surroundings

Vilajuïga railway station is served by the R11 and RG1 Rodalies lines. The restored Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes is located in the immediate vicinity of Vilajuïga. The monastery was built between the 10th and 12th centuries. A road from Vilajuïga provides easy access to this monastery.
