Culture and history

The mines of Celrà are part of the Les Gavarres Ethnological Area of Interest.

The Les Gavarres Ethnological Area of Interest is listed in the Register of Cultural Assets of National Interest (BCIN).

The parish church of Sant Feliu de Celrà has been documented since 1024 and had a Romanesque form at the beginning of the 11th century.

The Sagrera of Celrà dates from the early 11th century.

Its boundaries can be traced along Ronda de Baix, baixada de la Doma, and Maria Cristina streets.

The La Fàbrica walking tour passes through various areas of the former Celrà factory.

The areas are now used for cultural purposes.

Only areas accessible to the public can be visited.

The Festa Major of Celrà takes place on the weekend after 1 May.

It is celebrated in honour of the patron saints Sant Sixt and Sant Hou.

Getting there

Celrà is served by regional trains on the Barcelona–Figueres–Portbou line.

Sarfa buses reach Celrà from Girona, Baix Empordà, and the Costa Brava.

Nature along the Ter

On the riverbank at Illa dels Salzes, there is a well-developed strip of riparian woodland.

This strip is clearly present around the first viewpoint.

The riparian woodland is also clearly visible on the island that gives the area its name.

The Ruta del Ter invites you to experience the river with all five senses.

Along the way, you can discover an area with a rich historical and cultural heritage, as well as fauna, flora, and landscapes.

The Séquia Vinyals is a historic water-management infrastructure dating from the 18th century.

Its circular route runs through the fertile agricultural landscape of the small plain along the Ter.

It offers views of the canal’s calm waters.

Routes and experiences

The Illa dels Salzes i Camp d’Aviació excursion combines exploring the natural landscapes along the Ter with the preserved structures of a former airfield.

The airfield was used during the Spanish Civil War.

Celrà has several routes to medieval castles and towers.

Other destinations include lime kilns, brickworks, and iron-ore mines from the period of industrialisation.

The natural areas reached by these routes include the Ter and the Serra de les Gavarres.

The Forns de calç i la Rajoleria de Celrà circular route leads to the lime kilns of Mas Garriga and Can Taverner.

The Mas Garriga brickworks is also part of the same route.
