The parish church of Sant Esteve in Guils de Cerdanya is considered one of the most outstanding architectural gems of Romanesque architecture in Cerdanya.

Culture

The parish church of Sant Esteve is documented as a parish in the consecration charter of La Seu d’Urgell from the year 839. There it appears under the name “EGUILS”. The church has a semicircular apse. On its exterior there is a decorated cornice and a sawtooth frieze. The Pont de Sant Martí d’Aravó bridge has Roman origins. The Strata ceretana ran across it. Its two arches date from the 14th century, when the bridge was rebuilt. Sant Esteve therefore brings together the parish’s early written mention and the features of its structure that remain visible today. At Pont de Sant Martí d’Aravó, the present-day bridge structure likewise points to both the Roman transport route and the medieval rebuilding.

Activities

The Ruta del contrabandista mountain-bike route runs from Iravals to Guils via an initially gentle and then steep ascent. After Guils, it continues via Remei and Pont de Sant Martí. The route to Pedró de la Tossa begins in Guils de Cerdanya and leads to the Guils-Fontanera cross-country ski resort. It passes through dense black pine forests and grazing landscapes. The two routes showcase different landscapes: the mountain-bike route connects several named places and changes from a gentle to a steep section during the ascent, while the route to Pedró de la Tossa runs between forest and grazing land.

Landscape

The Estany de Malniu is located outside the municipality in the immediate surroundings of Guils de Cerdanya. Due to its proximity, it is considered an interesting excursion option. In the wider regional surroundings of Guils de Cerdanya, Territori Cerdanya 360 covers a 178 km route. This route passes through a mid- and high-mountain area at elevations between 960 and 2,257 m. The landscape description therefore ranges from medium to high mountain elevations within the wider regional surroundings. The Estany de Malniu belongs to the immediate surroundings, while Territori Cerdanya 360 describes the wider regional landscape with its broad range of elevations.
