Pals: Medieval Town, Rice Cultivation and Playa de Pals
The medieval town of Pals is characterised by cobbled streets. Its buildings are made of ochre-coloured and golden sandstone. The town contains anthropomorphic graves. They were carved into stone before the year 1000. The old town of Pals is designated as a historical-artistic ensemble.

Rice and local cuisine
The “Ruta del Arroz” begins in Pals and takes visitors on a small train through the rice fields. The tour explains rice cultivation, from sowing to harvesting. The route stops at the “Molí de Pals”, where the history of the building is explained. A rice mill has been preserved in Pals to this day. This rice mill dates from 1452. The “Arroz de Pals” brand includes native rice varieties. These varieties include “bahía” and “bomba”. “Arroz de Pals a la cazuela” is a traditional local dish. The dish is served in the town’s restaurants. The traditional rice planting event “Plantada tradicional del arroz” and the “Planta’t” campaign take place in June.
Coast
Playa de Pals is 3.5 kilometres long. Traditionally, it is divided into the two areas “Platja del Grau” and “Platja Gran”. One of these areas is called “Platja del Grau”. The other area is called “Platja Gran”. There are two water sports schools and a sailing club at Platja de Pals. These facilities offer visitors opportunities to practise water sports.
Landscape and nature
Pals is one of the municipalities within the “Parque Natural del Montgrí, las Illes Medes y el Baix Ter” natural park. Las Basses d’en Coll is a protected wetland. This wetland includes dunes. Native vegetation grows there. The Quermany Massif is the highest point in the landscape around Pals. From this highest point, there are views of the medieval ensemble. The view also extends across the expansive agricultural landscape.
The medieval town, the rice fields, Platja de Pals and the Quermany Massif each represent a named part of Pals’s townscape. The town is characterised by its streets, sandstone buildings and graves. The rice route combines the journey through the fields with a stop at the Molí de Pals and an explanation of rice cultivation. On the coast, Platja del Grau and Platja Gran divide the 3.5-kilometre-long Playa de Pals. In the natural park, the protected Las Basses d’en Coll wetland, its dunes and native vegetation complement the agricultural landscape viewed from the Quermany Massif.
