Trails and Landscape
Historic trails connect Torroella de Montgrí with l'Estartit and l'Escala and pass through Ullà and Bellcaire. The Montgrí mountain range is approximately 8 kilometres long and covers around 2,300 hectares. The Montgrí Massif features an extensive cultural heritage of dry-stone architecture, including walls, shelters, lime kilns, wells and vineyard huts.
The Ruta del Montgrí i el Baix Ter consists of four stages on foot; the park's cycling route consists of two stages by bicycle. The climb to Castell del Montgrí combines a walking trail with panoramic views. The Caminos del Montgrí make it possible to explore the castle, the valley and the hermitage of Santa Caterina on foot.
Construction of Castell del Montgrí began in 1294 as a defensive fortress. Work was halted in 1301, leaving the castle unfinished.
History
After Torroella became a royal town in 1272, the present-day old town developed as a walled settlement with narrow, straight streets and a central square. The Church of Sant Genís in Torroella de Montgrí is a Gothic cultural heritage site. The Portal de Santa Caterina dates from the 14th century.
The annual Fira de Sant Andreu continues to this day in Torroella de Montgrí as a local fair tradition. A gathering with celebrations takes place every year in November at the hermitage of Santa Caterina.
Museums and Festival Traditions
The Museu de la Mediterrània in the Can Quintana building in Torroella de Montgrí is an interactive museum that provides knowledge about Mediterranean nature, history and culture. The Sala de les Bèsties i dels Gegants is a permanent exhibition space devoted to the world of festive figures in Torroella de Montgrí and displays the current figures, including an eagle, dragon, giant, giantess and the big-headed figures.
The Mina d'aigua is a medieval infrastructure that supplied Torroella de Montgrí with water and is now considered a locally significant cultural heritage site; it can be visited as an underground historic site. The Museu de la Mediterrània's programme includes a guided visit to the Mina d'aigua, during which visitors enter an underground space and learn about Torroella de Montgrí's historic water-supply infrastructure.
At the Museu de la Mediterrània, the Sardana is presented as music and dance from the Baix Ter; there is also an interactive Cobla whose instruments can be explored. The Festival de Torroella de Montgrí presents classical music and contemporary works. It began in 1981 with a series of concerts in the medieval architectural setting of the old town.
The Cau del Duc cave in Torroella de Montgrí is a prehistoric site associated with settlement approximately 300,000 years ago.
