Rupià: Gothic Architecture, Local History and Cycling Tourism
The Castell – Palau episcopal in Rupià is a rectangular building in the civil Gothic style. It dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. Portal d’Amunt was an access route to Rupià’s old town centre; there were only two access routes in total.
Culture and History
The Sant Vicenç church in Rupià is a late Gothic religious building. The building has a single nave. It also includes side chapels and lateral buttresses. Thus, different ecclesiastical and secular architectural forms from various historical periods stand side by side in Rupià: the Castell belongs to the civil Gothic style, while Sant Vicenç is classified as late Gothic. Three specific architectural features can be considered together at Sant Vicenç: the single nave, the side chapels and the lateral buttresses.
Can Valls in Rupià is a 17th-century building. There is a coat of arms on the façade. Can Casimiro Vilà in Rupià also dates from the 17th century. The manor house preserves the remains of a rectangular tower from the former town wall. Thus, in addition to the episcopal palace, residential and defensive traces are also part of the town’s recorded history. Can Valls and Can Casimiro Vilà therefore combine a façade detail with a preserved element of the former town fortifications.
Materials from an indigenous settlement that was visited until the 1st century AD were found on Puig Montori in Rupià. The archaeological site expands the historical evidence with an indication of a considerably earlier settlement phase. With Puig Montori, the recorded history therefore extends beyond the medieval and early modern buildings into a much earlier period.
Landscape
One kilometre south of the village of Rupià stands the monumental olive tree L’olivera del Mas Llorà. At the base of its trunk, it has a circumference of six metres. Its highest branches reach up to twelve metres. The location south of the village and the two measurements are among the characteristic details of this individual landscape feature. The location and measurements show both its position south of Rupià and the tree’s exceptional proportions: the base of the trunk measures six metres in circumference, while the highest branches reach up to twelve metres.
