La Cellera De Ter: Nature, Trails and Cultural Heritage

La Cellera De Ter is home to the Coves del Pasteral, with burials dating from the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. These burials are dated to between 4500 and 2500 BC. The Coves del Pasteral archaeological site is considered significant for the later prehistory of Catalonia because burials from this period are rare in the western Mediterranean.

Archaeology

The Jaciment de la Font del Bassi dates from the Middle Paleolithic. The archaeological site contains worked stone material, including a hand axe. Thus, both prehistoric burials and worked stone objects have been documented in this area, although the two sites do not represent the same period.

Buildings

The Romanesque parish church of Santa Maria de Sales features Gothic and Baroque elements. These elements include a porch with stone columns and a wooden roof. During the Spanish Civil War, Can Dalmau was the headquarters of the POUM, the CNT, the Joventuts Llibertàries and the Unió Republicana d’Esquerra.

The Central hidroelèctrica de can Ribes is a site of significant heritage value. It is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. The ensemble of hydraulic structures associated with the Central hidroelèctrica de can Ribes is considered a remarkable example of 20th-century engineering.

Nature

The vegetation of la Cellera de Ter is predominantly made up of forests. This woodland vegetation includes cork oaks, strawberry trees, and oak and chestnut forests. The woodland landscape therefore comprises several different tree species and forest types. Fish such as barbels, nases, carp and eels, as well as frogs, water snakes, minks and turtles, are found in the Ter and stream areas. These waterside areas are thus characterised by these various animal groups.

Things to Do

There are numerous springs in the municipality of la Cellera de Ter. Some are accessible enough to make it possible to take a walking route known as the Ruta de les fonts. The Ruta de les pedreres de la Cellera de Ter is a circular route slightly more than 9 km long that visits several quarries in the area around la Cellera de Ter.

The Ruta de les pedreres de la Cellera de Ter is signposted with white and green markings. It starts and ends at a green space beside the old road from la Cellera to El Pasteral. The route therefore connects several quarries in the surrounding area with a shared start and finish point. The Via Verda del Carrilet Girona–Olot also passes through la Cellera de Ter. This route is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists.
