Coast and paths

The municipality of Begur encompasses the hills of the Begur Massif. This area also includes an extensive Mediterranean coastline. Begur has eight coves and smaller beaches. In Begur, there are three different sections of coastal paths connecting the coves and beaches. These coastal paths lead to hidden coves and offer the opportunity to experience the coastal landscape. Various nautical routes and excursions are available to discover the rugged coastline. The destinations of these routes and excursions include coves and caves.

The coastal landscape can therefore be encountered both on the paths between coves and beaches and on the nautical routes and excursions. The three coastal-path sections form the route on land, while the routes and excursions on offer additionally name coves and caves as destinations. This places various landscape forms of the extensive Mediterranean coastline side by side.

Culture and history

In the town centre, Begur’s historic heritage route is designed as an urban walking tour. It comprises a total of 29 heritage elements. Ancient walls can be seen in Begur. There are also five defensive towers, built between the 16th and 17th centuries. Defensive towers from the 16th century were built as places of refuge from pirate attacks. In the 19th century, more than 500 people from Begur crossed the Atlantic. They were seeking prosperity on the American continent. This history gave rise in Begur to a historically and architecturally valuable Indian heritage.

The walking tour thus combines the historical heritage of the town centre with visible structures. The surviving traces include the ancient walls and the five defensive towers, whose construction dates range from the 16th to the 17th century. The 16th-century towers are also connected with their former function as places of refuge from pirate attacks. A later historical focus is the story of the more than 500 people who crossed the Atlantic in the 19th century.

The Interpretation Center of the Indians of Catalonia in Begur offers an immersive experience of the history of the Indians. The Center is complemented by an audio-guided heritage route to Begur’s Indian houses. The history is therefore present both at the Interpretation Center and along the route to the Indian houses.

Viewpoints

The Ruta dels miradors de Begur passes through 17 different viewpoints. Most of the viewpoint route can be completed by car. However, some viewpoints can only be reached on foot. Those using the route will therefore find both the main section accessible by car and individual viewpoints accessible exclusively on foot.

The route thus connects 17 viewpoints along a course with two different types of access. Most of it can be travelled by car, while individual points can only be reached on foot. This distinction is part of the described structure of the Ruta dels miradors de Begur.

Gastronomy

Begur’s gastronomic campaign takes place every year in spring. During this campaign, participating restaurants offer special menus based on rockfish. The rockfish is the central ingredient of the specially offered menus.

The culinary event is therefore tied to spring and involves participating restaurants with specially created menus. The central ingredient of these menus is rockfish.
