Platja d'Aiguablava gives Aiguablava a clear connection to the coast. The beach lies in a sheltered bay approximately 80 metres long and 40 metres wide and offers gentle access to the sea. Aiguablava is also an important point on the GR-92, the coastal path along the entire Costa Brava.

Sea and history around Aiguablava

Cala d'Aiguablava in Begur has been used as an anchorage on a sea route to Rome since the 3rd century BC. The Parc Arqueològic Subaquàtic d’Aiguablava provides direct access to the underwater heritage by recreating archaeological sites excavated in Cala Aiguablava de Begur during several excavation campaigns between 2006 and 2013.

The coast can also be experienced from different directions while hiking. The Camí de ronda Sud connects the beaches of Aiguablava, Fornells and Platja Fonda. The Camino Viejo de Fornells–Aiguablava begins at the Fornells/Aiguablava crossroads and follows the old coastal path northwards to Playa Fonda or southwards to Playa de Aiguablava.

Hiking ideas for different days of your holiday

The Ruta GR-92 from Begur to Tamariu is classified as moderate to challenging, takes five hours and covers 11.5 km. It follows an old coastal path by the sea, connects the small coves of Fornells and passes via Cala de n’Estasia, Cala de Ses Orats, Cala de Malaret and Cala del Puerto de Esclanyà to Playa de Aiguablava. With a walking time of five hours and a distance of 11.5 kilometres, the route requires its own time frame with sufficient time for the walk and planned breaks. The classification as moderate to challenging describes the difficulty range of the hike. The route by the sea keeps this section close to the Costa Brava coast.

The coastal paths and waterside activities can be planned separately for different days of your holiday. The connection between the beaches, the Camino Viejo from the Fornells/Aiguablava crossroads and the section of the Ruta GR-92 lead across different parts of the coast. This allows one day to focus on the route, and another on the bay, the diving site, the view from the Mirador or the rockfish in Begur. The distance, duration and difficulty level of the Ruta GR-92 provide the specific planning parameters for this.

Boats, regional cuisine and views of the bay

At Aiguablava, there is a service for launching and anchoring boats. In the municipality of Begur, rockfish is the most traditional gastronomic element.
