Vilanova del Vallès: Trails, Winegrowing and Culture

The Ruta de la Il·lusió features hidden QR codes. They are located at the individual stations along the route. The codes lead to information about the distinctive features of local winegrowing. They also lead to a game. The route addresses these distinctive features and places them in the context of the DO Alella wine region.

Activities

The Ruta dels Capellans is 3 km long. It is particularly suitable for outings with children. Its route leads into the Bosc dels Capellans. This forest consists of pine trees, holm oaks and cork oaks. The route is therefore described as a specific 3 km-long trail, while the Bosc dels Capellans is characterised by three different tree species.

Geographical setting

The municipality of Vilanova del Vallès extends along the Mogent River in a northeast–southwest direction. The Serralada Prelitoral also follows this northeast–southwest direction. The Mogent divides the municipality into two geologically distinct areas.

On the right bank are Upper Miocene sediments. They include conglomerates, marls, sands and light-coloured clays. These sediments produce gentle landforms. They also produce soils suitable for cultivation. Granite predominates on the left bank. This granite is covered with pine trees. At 534 m, Mount Céllecs is the highest point of the Parc de la Serralada Litoral within the municipality.

Culture

The Santuari de Santa Quitèria combines Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements. The sanctuary offers views over parts of Vallès Oriental. These views include Montseny and Montserrat. Sant Llorenç del Munt and Puigmal in the Pyrenees can also be seen. Puigmal is located in the Pyrenees.

Can Safont is a large farmhouse. Its central building has a basilica-style floor plan. The preserved remains of a brick kiln are located a few metres from Can Safont. The brick kiln is no longer in use. The remains include two semicircular access openings. These openings are made of exposed brickwork.

Festivals

The Festa Major takes place on the Monday before the last Thursday in August. It is celebrated in honour of Sant Lleïr. Sant Lleïr is the patron saint of the municipality. The date is therefore based on the movable reference point of the last Thursday in August, rather than on a fixed calendar date. The Festa Major thus links its timing with the commemoration of the municipality’s patron saint.

The Aplec de Santa Quitèria takes place at Pentecost. This festival is referred to as the so-called second Pentecost, Pasqua granada.
