Discover Sant Juliá De Vilatorta

Sant Juliá De Vilatorta can be explored on a 9 km-long, flat and well-signposted circular route through the former Pla de la Quintana airfield. The trail leads to the most significant remains of the airfield operated during the Spanish Civil War, including several shelters, a hangar and a powder magazine, and is suitable for families.

Trails and landscapes

The trail to Font de la Riera is designed as an easy out-and-back hike and connects two distinctly different natural areas: a long, sunny ridge and shaded sections along the Riera. A flat, 3 km-long circular walk through the town centre passes notable buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as structures in the Modernisme, Historicism and Noucentisme styles.

A short, pleasant circular trail around Sant Juliá de Vilatorta connects several hydrological points of interest and illustrates traditional ways of obtaining and storing water. The section of the GR-2 La Jonquera–Aiguafreda between Sant Juliá de Vilatorta and Sant Llorenç del Munt begins at the Parc de les Set Fonts recreational area. The self-guided section of the GR 151 Camins del Bisbe i Abat Oliba from Sant Juliá de Vilatorta to Folgueroles also starts there.

Culture and history

The tradition of the Caramelles del Roser originated in Sant Juliá de Vilatorta around the Confraria del Roser, founded there in 1590, and has been practised every year without interruption ever since. Its defining elements include singing the Goigs del Roser, traditional clothing and locally composed pieces.

The Casa de les Caramelles on the ground floor of ca l'Anglada contains an interpretation centre and an audiovisual presentation about the tradition of the Caramelles del Roser. An exhibition room displays the festival's main elements, including Bordons, Cistella and Estendard.

The parish church Església parroquial de Sant Juliá de Vilatorta had an earlier pre-Romanesque predecessor dating from around 905. The present church dates from approximately 1050 and preserves the bell tower, the lower part of the apse and the parapet of the central nave from the 11th-century building.

The monastery of Sant Llorenç del Munt stands on a rock at the highest point of the municipality. Its Romanesque church preserves the central apse and two lateral apses. Torneja’t is a ceramics masterclass held as part of Keràmik and led by ceramicist Jan Madrenas.

Information and getting there

The information centre for the Guilleries-Savassona natural area at the Parc de les Set Fonts provides information about Sant Juliá de Vilatorta, the Guilleries-Savassona natural area and the Osona comarca. The Sant Llorenç del Munt area and its natural surroundings are considered an area of special ecological and landscape interest under the PEPMEN, the special protection and improvement plan for Guilleries-Savassona.

To travel towards Sant Juliá de Vilatorta, take exit 187 (Calldetenes/Sant Juliá de Vilatorta/Folgueroles) and then the N-141d road.
