Sant Llorenç Savall – Nature, Culture and History

Sant Llorenç Savall lies at the foot of the Sant Llorenç del Munt massif. Castell de Pera is a medieval castle ruin on a hill at an altitude of 743 metres. The origins of Castell de Pera are documented at least by a reference dating from 978.

Nature and Landscape

The Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac features reddish conglomerate cliffs and monoliths that contrast with the pine and holm oak forests on the slopes and in the mountain ravines. El Pi de les Quatre Besses divides at a low height into four symmetrical branches and is approximately 25 metres tall. El Pi de les Quatre Besses is listed as a monumental tree. La Font de Cal Llogari comprises a spring, basins with irrigation channels for the garden plots, and the characteristic riverside woodland landscape along the Ripoll River. La Cova Simanya is one of the larger and deeper of the 300 documented caves in the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac massif.

History and Culture

El Marquet de les Roques is a historicist, neo-Romanesque manor house from the late 19th century, built above a farmhouse dating from the beginning of the 13th century. The La Pahissa del Marquet cultural centre offers a continuous programme of exhibitions as well as artistic, literary, musical, educational and leisure activities. The church of Sant Feliu de Vallcàrcara was built in the mid-10th century and became the parish church for the scattered farmsteads in this area. Sant Jaume de Vallverd is a small Romanesque chapel built at the beginning of the 12th century in the upper reaches of the Mascarell stream. Sant Pere is an 11th-century Romanesque chapel beside El Dalmau that served the religious needs of farming families in the Vall de Mur. El Dalmau preserves original elements from the 16th to the 18th century, including sundials. El Daví is a medieval manor house with a ground floor, upper floor and attic in a rugged and secluded landscape.

Trails and Digital Experiences

Aventura digital is a digital treasure hunt through several historic buildings in Sant Llorenç Savall and covers the events experienced by the town during the Carlist Wars from 1833 to 1840. The SL-C 56 Castillo de Pera route begins at the bridge of La Muntada in Sant Llorenç Savall, is approximately 6.5 kilometres long and has a stated duration of two hours. PR-C 145 is designated as the Sendero de Sant Llorenç Savall among the park’s short hiking trails. La Muntada is a nature education facility that offers educational programmes and a meeting place for experiencing the surroundings of the Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac. Organic and socially oriented viticulture is practised at La Muntada, where the wine 5 quarteres is produced.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The traditional Ball de Gitanes dance is performed around Carnival in association with the groups Els Coloms, els Xicarrons, els Joves and els Moderats. The Pi de Maig festival, held annually on 1 May, involves erecting a large tree in the main square. The Fira de Sant Ponç takes place on 11 May and is associated with medicinal herbs and the beekeeping tradition; it also includes food stalls and the participation of local and visiting artisans.
