Mollet del Vallès: Nature, Parks and Culture

Gallecs covers 448 hectares within the municipality of Mollet del Vallès and is part of a 733.52-hectare rural area overall. In October 2009, Gallecs was included in the Pla d'Espais d'Interès Natural (PEIN), the network of protected natural areas in Catalonia.

Natural Area and Trails

From Mollet, Gallecs can be reached on foot via two pedestrian bridges over the motorway or by car via exits 15 and 16 of the AP-7. Parc dels Pinetons is directly connected to the Gallecs rural area by a footbridge; the footbridge crosses the AP-7 at the Carena dels Bandolers path. Parc de la Plana Lledó features Mediterranean vegetation, walking paths, an artificial lake with aquatic plants and a pergola surrounded by wisteria. The park covers almost 7 hectares and is known for its many shaded areas and peaceful corners.

City Parks and Gardens

Parc de Can Mulà is Mollet's first city park and features extensive children's play areas as well as a traffic education area. The 11-metre-high arch fountain at Parc de Les Pruneres marks the entrance to a 20,000-square-metre park with walking areas, inclusive children's play facilities, and places for resting and viewing. Parc dels Colors was inaugurated in 2001 and is a posthumous work by the architect Enric Miralles. The park reflects Mollet's industrial, agricultural and young urban history, as well as the city's location on the Besòs River, through brick walls, wooded areas, raised concrete and steel structures with graffiti designs, and fountains and water jets. Jardí de la Farinera preserves elements reminiscent of the original neoclassical garden, including a central avenue of lime trees and terracotta pots containing spherical boxwood topiary.

Culture and History

The Museu Abelló opened on 29 March 1999 in a Modernist building whose façade has been preserved and which formerly served as a Guardia Civil barracks. The collection comprises more than 10,000 works, including significant holdings of 19th- and 20th-century Catalan painting and sculpture. Centro Cultural La Marineta features an auditorium with a stage and 80 seats for conferences, discussion panels, film screenings, small performances and chamber music concerts, as well as exhibition spaces. Santa María de Gallecs is a late Romanesque church dating from the 12th to the 14th century; its floor plan forms a single-nave Latin cross, complemented by a pointed vault. Masia Can Borrell is a fortified farmhouse dating from the 13th to the 14th century and the only surviving fortified farmhouse in the municipality. The Menhir de Mollet features engravings and reliefs, including a recognisable face, and has the character of a menhir statue; it is 5 metres high and weighs 6 tonnes. Edifici Can Gomà was built in 1947 by the architect Francesc Vilagut to produce Cava on behalf of the Gomà family, the owners. Its basement housed the Xampany Gomà Cava cellars, with a 2-kilometre circular tour. The building was converted to accommodate Teatro Municipal Can Gomà, the municipal music and dance school, and various cultural facilities run by the municipality.

Regional Products

Agrobotiga de Gallecs is a small local shop run by farmers from the region. It sells organic products from Gallecs and other places, as well as artisan and regional products.
