Els Monjos: Aviation History, Mill and Church Architecture

CIARGA is a museum dedicated to aviation and the Spanish Civil War in Santa Margarida i els Monjos. The Serral site is located on the republican airfield of dels Monjos. CIARGA presents local information about the existence of the Els Monjos airfield, which was used by republican squadrons. The institution conveys the history of republican aviation during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939 and shows its development during the war. The Serral site thus connects the museum presentation with a specific location in the local history of aviation.

Culture

In the centre of Els Monjos is El Molino del Foix, a medieval grain mill. It used the water of the Foix River to grind grain and produce flour. El Molino del Foix also includes a botanical garden with native species. The mill thus combines its former function on the Foix with a garden area featuring native species.

The dels Monjos parish church has three naves and a semicircular apse. The church features a portal with a Tudor arch and a rose window. A row of Neo-Gothic pointed-arch arcades runs along the upper section. At the parish church, the three-nave layout and the apse are combined with several clearly defined elements of its exterior design.

The “Vinseum - Catalan Wine Cultures Museum” is located in the immediate vicinity of Els Monjos. The ancient site “Pedrera Romana” is also nearby. The “Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya” is likewise part of the immediate surroundings. The ancient site “Medieval Cases Ibèriques i Medievals” is also located near Els Monjos. The cultural surroundings thus extend from wine and archaeological museums to the ancient and medieval sites in the immediate area.

Tradition

The Festa Major dels Monjos takes place every year around 20 July in honour of Saint Margarida. Its annual date around 20 July gives this festival a fixed place in the local calendar.
