El Pont de Vilomara: Tines, Culture and Winemaking History

In el Pont de Vilomara i Rocafort, dry-stone tines are scattered across the northwestern slope of the Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac and its surrounding area. The Tines de la Vall del Flequer are a valuable rural heritage site and an exceptional legacy from the period of the wine boom in Bages.

Culture and History

Santa Magdalena del Pla is a Romanesque church first mentioned in a document in 1077. Santa Maria de Matadars preserves significant remains of pre-Romanesque Catalan architecture and has remained free of later alterations. The building is designated as a cultural asset of national interest. A fenced park surrounds Santa Maria de Matadars.

The Pont Gòtic o Pont Vell was built in Roman times as a stone bridge on the site of an earlier wooden bridge. The Camí Ral, which ran from Bages to Barcino, crossed the bridge. Thirteen groups of tines in Talamanca, Mura and el Pont de Vilomara i Rocafort are designated as BCIN, meaning cultural assets of national interest; most of them are located in the Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac.

Trails and Winemaking

The L’Escudelleta group in the Vall del Flequer comprises eleven tines, seven shelters and a wine press. The SL-C 52 Les tines de la vall del Flequer route runs mainly along forest trails and paths; dry-stone walls, winemaking facilities and the natural surroundings shape the route.

A guided excursion follows the unique dry-stone tines where wine was produced amid the mountainous landscape at the foot of the vineyards. The structures on this excursion date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Les tines amb tast de vins de la DO Pla de Bages route includes a tasting of two DO Pla de Bages wines accompanied by a small snack of regional products. The combination of tines, a wine press, shelters and wine tasting showcases the different material and culinary aspects of the history of winemaking in Bages.

Places and Events

The Centre d’Informació de Rocafort organises guided walks at weekends to discover Castell de Rocafort. The Museu de Rocafort opened on 15 August 1986 and was significantly expanded in 1996. The Festa Major takes place on the weekend closest to the feast of Saint Magdalene, usually the third weekend in July.

Casa-Saies was a logistical support centre for the Maquis during the anti-Francoist struggle and is now uninhabited.
