Culture and local history

El Bruc lies at the foot of Montserrat. El Bruc de la Parròquia preserves its original medieval layout. In Bruc del Mig, Can Casas Petit is a Modernist building from the early 20th century.

Can Casas combines rooms for a winery and distillery on the ground floor with an elegant residence on the main floor. Can Casas was designed and managed by the architect Cristòfor Cascante i Colom, who studied and worked with Antoni Gaudí. Vil·la Antoinette, also known as Can Díaz, is a Modernist residential building constructed in 1916 to a design by the architect Ricard Giralt.

The ceramic construction and the cladding of the entire Can Cordero building with terracotta panels reflect the importance of the brick industry in El Bruc. The Museu de la Muntanya de Montserrat del Bruc houses collections on the Battles of El Bruc and climbing at Montserrat.

A smartphone audio guide uses QR codes to explore the town’s streets and history. The audiovisual experience "Sensacions Verticals" lasts 14 minutes and uses the "Cavall Bernat" to demonstrate the techniques and equipment used in climbing.

Other places at the same destination level include Mongat, Capellades, Talamanca, Malgrat De Mar, Sant Esteve Sesrovires, Olvan, Castellgalí and Arenys De Mar.

Landscape at Montserrat

A large part of El Bruc is covered by forest. These include pine, oak, and holm oak forests; there are also hazelnut and almond trees. Access to the Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat via Can Maçana has contributed to the revitalisation of El Bruc.

The Torre del Telègraf, also known as Castell Ferran, was built in the mid-19th century as part of a telegraph chain connecting Barcelona with several military garrisons stationed in Catalonia. From the 789-metre-high elevation of the Torre del Telègraf, the approaches to the 744-metre-high Can Maçana pass are visible on both its southern and northern sides.

Trails and megalithic finds

Cova Tapada can be reached via a path branching off the route from El Bruc to Can Maçana. The only megalithic remains known in the massif, as well as Neolithic burials, were discovered there. The Megalit de la Diablera is located along the route from El Bruc to Can Maçana and has a small information board.

The section of the Camí de les Batalles from Bruc de Dalt to Les Creus Verdes offers a comprehensive view of the battlefield.

Festivals and remembrance

The Festa del Timbaler commemorates the battles of 6 and 14 June 1808 in the area around Coll de Can Maçana during the Spanish War of Independence. It has been held for many years on the first weekend of June and includes, among other things, street theatre, traditional children’s games, a historical market, historical re-enactments, Trabucaires, drummers, and a beer festival.
