Collsuspina – History, Nature and Hiking Routes

Culture and History

Collsuspina reveals historical traces from different periods. Carrer Major and the old town of Collsuspina emerged in the 18th century from several inns along the King's Road. Sant Cugat de Gavadons adds a Romanesque church to this townscape, with a structure characteristic of the 12th century. The church is first mentioned in 948 under the place name Gavadons. Every year on 1 May, an Aplec, a traditional gathering, takes place at Sant Cugat de Gavadons. Can Xarina was the first house built there and is now a hostel.

An Aplec also connects the church site with a recurring date. For events, current dates should be checked before arrival, as times may change.

Archaeology

At the Poua de glaç de l'Espina, dimensions and construction come together directly: The structure has a diameter of 9 metres but is not perfectly round. The preserved walls are 5 or 6 metres high. Ancient graves were excavated near l'Espina in Collsuspina. Below the settlement of Collsuspina, at l'hort del Paleta, an inhabited cave yielded archaeological finds.

The archaeological sites therefore range from a preserved structure with unusual geometry to excavated graves and an underground inhabited cave.

Nature

Bosc de Casanova is a protected area where the three centuries-old oak trees can be viewed. Within the municipality of Collsuspina, near Sant Cugat de Gavadons, there is also a hydrographic divide. At this point, the catchment areas of the Ter, Besòs and Llobregat rivers meet. Thus, individual centuries-old trees and the watersheds of three rivers stand alongside one another as distinct natural features.

Hiking

The Bosc de Casanoves – El Querol route is an easy circular trail. The route to the Sant Cugat de Gavadons hermitage is 6.47 km long. Both routes already include their destinations in their names, but differ in their described form: One is designated as a circular trail, while the other is defined by its specific length. Current trail conditions can be checked before a hike.

Getting There

Public bus route 710 operates on the l'Estany – Moià – Castellterçol – Moià – Collsuspina – Tona – Vic route. Collsuspina lies on this route between Moià and Tona. The timetable is valid from 18 November 2024, and the line is partially adapted for people with reduced mobility. When travelling by bus, the current departure times should be checked before the journey.
