Horcajo de Santiago: Culture, Trails and Holiday Apartment

In Horcajo de Santiago stands the Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción, whose construction began in 1515 and was completed at the beginning of the 17th century. The building combines Gothic and Renaissance elements. On the south side of the church, the Puerta del Sol opens as a Plateresque portal with a semicircular arch, pilasters featuring Saints Peter and Paul, and a niche containing the Immaculate Conception. This niche is crowned by a triangular pediment. Because of its historical and artistic value, the church was protected in August 2017 as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.

Culture and History

The Casa Museo El Vítor is housed in the former 16th-century poor hospital of the Order of Santiago. The upper floor displays characteristic elements of the Vítor Festival, including banners, clothing, ritual objects and historical photographs. Explanatory panels provide information about the development of the tradition over the centuries. The Casa Museo also presents culinary customs, traditions and dishes from Manchegan and Horcajeño cuisine.

Museums and Everyday Life

The cave dwellings carved into the rock in Horcajo de Santiago bear witness to the traditional way of life in the town; some are still in use. The Museo Etnográfico displays household items and objects from rural life. The Museo del Lápiz is dedicated to local handicrafts and creativity.

Festival Tradition and Local History

El Vítor, the most important religious festival in Horcajo de Santiago, begins on the afternoon of 7 December in the church with the bringing out of the banner of the Immaculate Conception. During the night, the procession moves through Horcajo. On 8 December, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and the town's patronal feast, it continues through the town until noon. El Vítor culminates in a large procession in which the banner is carried through the streets amid the participants' continuous calls.

Trails and Landscape

The PR-CU 65 Ruta de los Chozos hiking trail runs entirely within the municipality of Horcajo de Santiago. It passes through gently rolling terrain, where mainly cultivated dry-farming areas alternate with holm oaks in the hollows and scattered almond trees along the field margins. The trail starts beside the Ermita de la Virgen del Rosario, passes through Parque Ángel Horcajada and runs parallel to the Arroyo Cantarranas.
