Nature

Villar de Cañas is located in the open landscape of the Mancha Alta, whose extensive dryland crops shape the scenery. Rural paths leading from the town centre make it possible to explore the surrounding area and experience the characteristic vastness of the landscape in the south of the province of Cuenca. The GR 163 Ruta del Cristal de Hispania passes through Villar de Cañas.

Vegafría is an avenue of poplar trees, or a stand of poplars, with gardens through whose fertile vega the Sanguijuelas River flows. In La Pesquera there is a natural spring whose water is channelled to a noria via an irrigation canal. Numerous traces of former Arab inhabitants can be found on Cerro la Morra.

Culture and History

The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a 16th-century Renaissance church. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza is a single-nave chapel from the 17th century with three Baroque-style altars.

The freely accessible “Senderos de Arte e Inclusión” art trail runs through Villar de Cañas; large-format reproductions of works by Leonardo da Vinci are integrated into its streets. La Fragua del Arte displays adapted works by Leonardo da Vinci and Joaquín Sorolla, as well as a true-to-scale reproduction of Michelangelo’s David.

La Fragua del Arte also offers an escape room on the theme of Ancient Egypt, combining history, art and play. The organisation runs a free guided tour through Villar de Cañas on the theme of Leonardo da Vinci. The programme includes cultural tours with tastings of Spanish gastronomic products and wines. La Fragua del Arte is planned as a permanent logistics, exhibition and educational centre in Villar de Cañas.

Festivals and Traditions

“Los Pasos” is a religious tradition observed in Villar de Cañas on Holy Saturday, in which participants silently repeat the procession route, often barefoot or partly on their knees. The Mayos are sung in May in honour of the Virgen de la Cabeza by worshippers who come to the chapel.

Around 15 May, the festivities of San Isidro include a procession and a traditional Romería to the chapel in a pine grove near Cerro el Pino. The Hermandad de la Virgen de la Cabeza organises festivities in Villar de Cañas in August and September. On the evening of 16 January, the “Luminarias” are lit—fires made from old objects, Spanish broom and firewood.

Getting There

Villar de Cañas is located approximately eight kilometres from the A-III Madrid–Valencia motorway; the CM-3118 road leads into the town from Villares del Saz. According to local calculations, the total length of the religious route of “Los Pasos” is 4.3 kilometres.
