Rozalén Del Monte: Romanesque Architecture, Pilgrimage Festivals and Trails along the Río Bedija

Rozalén del Monte’s main landmark is the Iglesia Parroquial de San Bernabé, which is regarded as the town’s most important monument.

Culture and Religious Heritage

The Iglesia de San Bernabé is a late Romanesque resettlement church built in the 12th century. Parts of the walls of the presbytery and nave, as well as the apse area, preserve original Romanesque elements. The apse also retains remains of the original corbel course and an arrow slit window framed with stone blocks.

The Ermita de San Sebastián is located very close to the town centre and can be visited as part of Rozalén del Monte’s religious heritage. The celebration of Cristo de la Veracruz takes place on 14 September and combines religious services with neighbourhood gatherings and traditional activities.

On the last Sunday in April, celebrations in honour of the Santísimo Cristo del Consuelo take place, featuring a solemn Mass and a procession through the town centre. On 22 May, Santa Quiteria is celebrated with the traditional sweet Caridades, which are distributed at the church entrance after Mass. A pilgrimage then leads to the Ermita de Santa Quiteria, located on the hill of the same name above the town.

Landscape and Winegrowing

Rozalén del Monte is one of the municipalities in the D.O. Vino de Uclés wine-growing region. The town lies above an open grain-growing plain characteristic of La Mancha.

Fuente Vieja is a traditional local spot where water and vegetation create a peaceful setting for walks. The area around Rozalén del Monte is characterised by open farmland and rural paths, allowing the La Mancha landscape to be explored at a leisurely pace.

Trails along the Río Bedija

Parque Río Bedija is a green area beside the Bedija River, which flows through Rozalén del Monte’s town centre at this point. From Parque Río Bedija, a 3.83-kilometre path leads to the source of the Bedija; half of the route runs on asphalt along the CUV-7021.

The Camino Natural Río Bedija is intended for travel on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The route is 28.8 kilometres long and is laid out from the river’s source to its mouth.

Its highest stated point is at the source, at an elevation of 876 metres, and its lowest is at the mouth, at 733 metres, where it joins the Camino Natural del Riánsares. At Rozalén del Monte, the Camino Natural del Río Bedija is listed as an easy one-way route.

Access

The official route from Cuenca to the Monasterio de Uclés passes through Rozalén del Monte before reaching Uclés. The CUV-7021 connects Rozalén del Monte with Tribaldos and Carrascosa del Campo.
