Monteagudo de las Salinas: Castle, Saltworks and Camino de la Lana
Monteagudo de las Salinas is home to the Castillo de Monteagudo de las Salinas, a medieval fortress with early medieval origins. Its history dates back to the 12th century; the remains visible today correspond to alterations made in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Culture and History
Access to the castle is free of charge. Due to their state of preservation, the outdoor grounds and the interior of the complex can only be visited with particular caution. The Iglesia del Salvador is located on Plaza Francisco Patiño in Monteagudo de las Salinas. The Salinas de Monteagudo have been exploited since the Middle Ages and were an important factor in the economic development of the area in which they are located. The Salinas de Monteagudo are no longer in use.
Townscape
Monteagudo de las Salinas preserves traditional architecture adapted to the terrain, with stone houses and streets that rise towards the castle area.
Hiking and Pilgrimage Routes
The Salinas de Monteagudo are located 3.2 kilometres southeast of Monteagudo de las Salinas. They can be reached via a forest track that runs parallel to the Arroyo de las Salinas.
There is no settlement on the Camino de la Lana stage between Monteagudo de las Salinas and Fuentes. Hikers must therefore bring water and provisions. The Finca de Navarramiro de Arriba is the only intermediate reference point along the route.
The Camino de la Lana from the direction of Cardenete joins the route from the direction of Alicante near the former saltworks of Monteagudo and then climbs towards the town centre of Monteagudo de las Salinas. A 31.58-kilometre stage of the Camino de la Lana runs along the Camino de las Salinas and through the Hoya de las Ánimas, follows the Arroyo de las Salinas and approaches Monteagudo de las Salinas. The stage between Monteagudo de las Salinas and Fuentes runs largely along forest tracks through the Baja Serranía de Cuenca.
For planning purposes, the routes can be distinguished by length, course and landscape. The different route lengths help provide a rough idea of the time required; route types and landscapes also add different thematic focuses. Culture, townscape, hiking and pilgrimage traditions can likewise be considered as separate areas of focus.
Tradition
On 15 June, Monteagudo de las Salinas celebrates the festival in honour of the holy martyrs Vitus, Modestus and Crescentia. According to local tradition, it dates back to a vow made by the inhabitants in 1624.
