El Peral: Wine Landscape, Festivals and Holiday Apartments

El Peral is surrounded by a mosaic of vineyards that shapes the built-up area of the town. The landscape also includes grain fields and gentle hills. The town belongs to the wine-growing area of the Ruta del Vino de La Manchuela and represents a form of slow rural tourism centred on the agriculturally shaped landscape and work in the countryside.

Nature and Trails

The agriculturally shaped surroundings offer walking routes and opportunities for cycling. The Camino Natural del Río Valdemembra creates a special connection between landscape and movement: the route runs for 121 kilometres from Chumillas to Valdeganga and is designed for hiking, cycling and horse riding. Maps, elevation profiles and GPS tracks are available for independent use. The route mainly follows roads, paths and tracks in order to avoid asphalt, although this is not possible everywhere. Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is considered the most representative building in El Peral and shapes the townscape as well as the historical and religious life of the municipality. It dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and has a restored Gothic altarpiece. Two naves separated by columns and round arches define the interior; next to the altar is a chapel in the Gothic style. The building also includes a bell tower with an added structure providing access and a sacristy attached to the chancel. With the exception of the chapel’s ribbed dome, the roofs consist of traditional wooden structures.

At the entrance to the town stands El Rollo, a stone column from the 15th century and a symbol of jurisdiction. The Casa Señorial de Luján is known for its central “media naranja” hall. Beside the river and a medieval bridge stands the Ermita de la Virgen del Espino, while the Ermita de San Isidro is located near El Peral’s bullring. The Ermita de San Cosme y San Damián features Neoclassical and neo-traditional elements. In its niche on the front wall of the main altar are two small, gilded and polychrome-painted wooden sculptures from the 20th century by unknown artists. Near El Peral, along the Río Valdemembra on a small hill close to the road, are archaeological remains from the Bronze Age and the Iberian culture.

Festivals and Regional Cuisine

The festivals held in August in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción bring residents and visitors together. El Peral’s patron-saint festivals in honour of San Cosme and San Damián are also known as the “Fiestas de los Santicos”. The Fiestas de los Santicos take place on 27 September. Bonfires lit on the eve and the procession held the following day when the Santicos are carried down are regarded as deeply rooted traditions; bullfights also take place on that day.

The May festivals in honour of the Virgen del Espino include Mayos, a procession, an auction of carrying poles and the distribution of alms bread. Rural products associated with El Peral include wine, grain, lentils and almonds; the visitor experience also includes wines from La Manchuela and traditional cuisine from La Mancha.
