Poyatos – History, Gorges and Hiking Destinations

Poyatos combines a walled area dating from the 15th century with a landscape where gorges, water and historic paths lie close together. In 2001, the town was declared a Conjunto Histórico. Between the narrow streets and stone houses, views open up towards the waters of the Río Escabas.

Culture and Townscape

Several distinctive buildings form part of Poyatos’s historic character. The Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena is a Gothic church. The Arco del Concejo was the historic gateway to the town. This architectural heritage is complemented by the Fuente romana, whose name refers to a Roman feature.

The townscape is not limited to individual sights. Narrow streets and stone houses shape the built structure, while the Río Escabas adds a natural perspective through its connection with the water. Nature in the Serranía de Cuenca

Poyatos lies on the boundaries of the Parque Natural de la Serranía de Cuenca. The town is also part of the Destino Turístico Starlight de la Serranía de Cuenca. This means that a large-scale natural-area designation and a tourism classification relating to the starry sky meet the landscape forms directly visible around the town.

Near Poyatos there is a narrow gorge as well as another gorge with a large waterfall. The water from this waterfall has carved out rock formations. The two gorges therefore represent different natural scenes: one a narrow cut in the terrain, the other water, falling height and shaped rock.

Hiking and Water

Lagunillos is one of the scenic destinations accessible via hiking trails. The single-arch Puente de Barbazoso on the road to Tejadillo is also one of these destinations. The bridge’s name is associated with a specific structure, while Lagunillos is a separate hiking destination.
