El Cañavate: Holiday apartment among castle traces and country roads

Culture and history

Above the town of El Cañavate, the Castillo de El Cañavate rises on the Cerro del Castillejo. Today, only a section of wall and a masonry window remain.

The parish church of El Cañavate stands on a small hill and can be reached from the Plaza Mayor via a steep paved ascent. The Castillejo de Cañavate is considered accessible to visitors; its entrance is within the town.

Outside the municipal area of El Cañavate, the Ermita de la Virgen de Trascastillo is located on the Cerro del Castillo; access is via Calle Poeta Rafael Alfaro no. 34. The ermita is a monumental hall church with three naves and a pentagonal polygonal apse.

In the central nave of the Ermita de la Virgen de Trascastillo, a wooden roof structure of the armadura de par y nudillo type with decorated octagonal artesonados has been preserved. The Museo Antológico of the Asociación Cultural Fuente del Chorrillo displays photographs and objects documenting local life and traditions in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

Archaeology and architectural history

Remains of Roman baths uncovered during water-supply construction work in El Cañavate are dated to the period between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. The Roman baths area preserves a worked, orthogonally arranged limestone floor whose slabs form a grid.

The excavated baths area includes a caldarium, a laconicum (steam bath), a possible area that may have been a tepidarium (warm-water bath), as well as remains of a presumed hypocaustum (heating system).

Traditions and festivals

La matazón, the traditional pig slaughter, was historically a true family celebration. The historical tradition of the Mayos involved young people walking through the streets on the night of 30 April and singing beneath the windows of young women.

A local tradition is associated with the Cueva de la Mora: Moraima briefly appears at sunrise on Saint John’s Day, when the first rays of sunlight illuminate the cave entrance.

At the opening of El Cañavate’s patron saint festivities in 2025, the solemn Bajada de la Virgen de Trascastillo marked the first day of the celebrations.
