Molinos De Papel: Paper History and Hiking in the Hoz del Huécar

Molinos De Papel leads from paper production to religious architecture and into the gorge landscape of the Hoz del Huécar. The fine-paper mill founded by Juan de Otonel had six wheels.

Culture

A hermitage founded in the 16th century in Molinos de Papel preserves a small oil painting venerated under the name Virgen del Trapo. Next to the Casa-palacio de los Señores de Cuba stands a Neo-Gothic pantheon containing the tombs of the Cuba y Clemente family.

The Palacio-panteón de Molinos de Papel is laid out as a rectangular complex. Its wings stand perpendicular to the main axis; at the centre is a courtyard with a fountain. Several museums are also located in the vicinity of Molinos de Papel: Muralla, the Museo de Arte abstracto español, the Museo arqueológico de Cuenca and the Museo Diocesano de Cuenca.

The cultural sites have different focal points: The hermitage connects its foundation in the 16th century with the veneration of the small oil painting. With its Neo-Gothic design and the tombs of the Cuba y Clemente family, the pantheon refers to a different historical context. Hiking and Gorge

The signposted PR-CU 36 Sendero de la hoz del Huécar hiking trail is promoted by the Ayuntamiento Palomera and passes through Molinos de Papel. The PR-CU 36 is a 7.70-kilometre circular hiking trail with a low difficulty level and a stated walking time of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The trail follows a narrow, winding path above the Hoz del Huécar to Molinos de Papel. At the Mirador de la Cruz Alta, it offers panoramic views of the gorge.

The PR-CU 36 is signposted and prepared for hiking. However, in the variable mountain environment, the difficulty level may increase depending on the weather, the condition of the terrain and physical fitness.
