Laguna Del Marquesado: Lagoon, Circular Trail and Local Culture
Around Laguna Del Marquesado, geological features, nature observation and tangible evidence of the town’s history come together. The Laguna del Marquesado, after which the town is named, is a nature reserve and has been included in Castilla-La Mancha’s network of protected areas. You can view the town from two perspectives: the landscape tells a story of water and rock, while festivals, the village square and historic buildings provide distinct cultural points of reference.
Nature
As a karst wetland, Laguna del Marquesado was formed by a natural tufa barrier that dams the Arroyo del Soto. The wetland lies within the municipality of the same name, in the Júcar basin and in the heart of the Serranía de Cuenca. Viewing a landscape through its formation and geographical setting provides two distinct ways of approaching the lagoon. The geological formation and the wider natural area do not have to be reduced to a single perspective.
Hiking
The SL-CU 15 is a circular trail between the town and the karst lagoon of Laguna del Marquesado. Near the lagoon, the trail passes through pine, holm oak and maple trees to a viewpoint with wide-ranging views over the lagoon. There, you can observe numerous birds as well as aquatic and marsh plants. Known as the SL-CU 15 Sendero de la Laguna del Marquesado, the circular trail is 5 km long and has a low difficulty level.
The route, length and difficulty level provide different points of orientation for planning your day; observing plants and birds offers a separate focus. On the SL-CU 15, the route information and difficulty level accompany the observations at Laguna del Marquesado; trail data and details of the natural environment represent different points of reference. When booking a holiday apartment in Laguna Del Marquesado, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions provide a separate practical framework. This information belongs to accommodation planning and sits alongside the town’s characteristics: the nature reserve and karst wetland, the SL-CU 15, as well as the August festivals and historic buildings. Accommodation details and the town’s various themes remain separate aspects, each of which can be compared independently.

Culture and History
The town’s culture also has tangible points of reference connected to its calendar, village square and historic buildings. The town’s main festivals are celebrated on 24 August in honour of San Bartolomé and on 16 August in honour of San Roque. Local tradition dictates that, particularly, newcomers are baptised in the pilón fountain on the village square.
The Church of San Bartolomé is a Baroque building constructed between the 17th and 18th centuries. The church contains a processional cross made of repoussé silver. Another historic testimony is the Casa del Arzobispo López-Cabrejas. It dates from the 17th century and bears a bishop’s coat of arms. Dates, ritual and buildings establish different timeframes and each offers its own approach to the history and local life.
