Garaballa is located in the Serranía Baja de Cuenca and features a landscape of Mediterranean scrubland, pine forests and gently rolling terrain. The different landscape elements give the area a changing character, alternating between wooded areas, open scrubland and gentle landforms. The Monasterio de Tejeda is located within the municipality of Garaballa and dates from the 16th and 18th centuries.

Several perspectives come together in the description of the landscape: scrubland, forest and terrain define the character of the area, while the Ojos de Moya River follows its own course through the area. Garaballa is therefore not confined to a single type of natural setting, but emerges through a range of specific features.

Nature and Trails

The Ojos de Moya River runs through Garaballa; its waters flow between the mountains and pine forests characteristic of the Serranía. The 5.68 km PR-CU 110 Hoz del río Ojos de Moya circular hiking trail begins at the entrance to the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Tejera in Garaballa, beside the CUV-5009 road.

The natural setting and the trail each emphasize different aspects. The river describes the landscape through water, mountains and forests, while the circular trail makes it tangible through a precisely stated length, a name and a clearly designated starting point.

Culture and Pilgrimage

The Monasterio de Tejeda has two cloisters. The Cueva de la Virgen de Tejeda can be reached via a stepped ramp from the riverbank. According to tradition, the Virgen de Tejeda appeared to a shepherd in 1205 at a cave within the municipality of Garaballa; she was sitting on a yew tree at the time. The complex and the cave thus represent different forms of religious tradition and sacred design.

The Cueva de la Virgen de Tejeda continues to be a regularly visited place of Marian devotion. Alongside the traditional apparition, the ongoing veneration is therefore also part of this site's significance.

History

Tejeda la Vieja comprises the ruins of a paper mill and a fortress. The site also shows evidence of settlement in the Late Bronze Age, the Iberian period, the Late Roman period, and the Early and Late Middle Ages during both the Islamic and Christian periods.

Tejeda la Vieja combines visible ruins with a long sequence of settlement traces. The paper mill and fortress identify two different components of the site, while the periods mentioned fill out the historical framework from the Late Bronze Age to the Middle Ages from several perspectives.

Tradition

The patronal festivities in honor of the Virgen de Tejeda take place around September 8 and include a floral offering, processions and evening events. The date and the individual elements give this tradition a clear temporal and thematic framework.
