Zafra de Záncara – History, Castle Remains and Trails

Zafra de Záncara is a place whose origins date back to the Muslim era. One of its visible historical landmarks is the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, built between the 16th and 17th centuries. An old wall of Muslim origin is also among the town’s cultural heritage features.

Culture and History

Another testament to the town’s long history is the Ermita de la Virgen de Arriba. It was built in the Romanesque style in the 12th or early 13th century; a semicircular apse has survived. The ruins stand outside the town on a slope. The Palacio del Rusiano dates from the 18th century. Remains of a castle have also survived in the highest part of the municipality.

The local festival calendar includes patron-saint festivities in honour of the Virgen del Rosario. Another traditional custom is the Subasta del Ánima, organised by the Hermandad de Ánimas that exists in the town. Religious buildings, wall remains, a palacio, castle ruins and living traditions each represent different aspects of the town’s cultural character.

The built-up area of Zafra de Záncara lies on a high hill and along its steep northern slope. The Camino Natural del Río Záncara leads to fortresses and castles, including Zafra de Záncara. The entire route is 186 kilometres long, divided into four sections, and passes through or just past Zafra de Záncara via a short detour. Its stages are designed for hiking on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

A local circular trail starts at the town hall square in Zafra de Záncara. It is slightly more than six kilometres long and is considered challenging because of steep descents over loose stone. Along the route, the trail leads from the castle to a mill located at an altitude of 994 metres at the Viento geodetic point. The circular trail then passes beneath the Trasvase Tajo-Segura canal. The different route lengths and means of travel allow a comparison between a single circular tour and a multi-stage route.
