Almedina is a place where sacred architectural history can be read in tangible details. The Iglesia de Santa María is a 14th-century parish church in the Late Gothic, or Elizabethan, style and was previously a Muslim mosque. The Ermita de los Remedios is an 18th-century Neoclassical building; its small interior dome bears popular paintings from 1725.

Culture and History

The Casino de Labradores, formerly called Círculo la Amistad, has a history spanning more than a century. The Museo al Aire Libre of Almedina comprises 26 ceramic reproductions of works by the Renaissance painter Fernando Yáñez de Almedina. The urban gymkhana of the Museo al aire libre de Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina takes children and young people through 22 works from the museum displayed in public streets.

The stone portal beside the Ayuntamiento belongs to the house where Fray Juan Muñoz de la Cueva was born and lived. The Fuente pública del emperador Carlos V, also known as the Fuente del Emperador, has an imperial coat of arms, three cast-iron spouts and stone basins. At the Horno apícola municipal, an attempt was made to achieve greater integration into the landscape through traditional architectural materials. The Puente Romano was archaeologically excavated and restored in 2015. Two road surfaces from different periods can be identified on it. The older of the two road surfaces would, in all likelihood, have been Roman Via 29, which connected Mariana near Puebla del Príncipe on the Vía Augusta with Consabura near Consuegra.

Things to Do

The Ruta de los Pizorros is a 12.45-kilometre hiking trail of low difficulty. The Paseo de las Cruces leads to the gardens of Dehesilla and the Ermita de San Isidro y San Cristóbal. The Baile de Ánimas originated in the 14th century and continues to take place every year on 28 December. Almedina’s traditional cuisine includes gachas, migas, galianos or gazpacho manchego, as well as dishes featuring red-legged partridge. The 12.45 kilometres of the Ruta de los Pizorros, the guided tours, the urban gymkhana and the fixed date of the Baile de Ánimas provide useful points of reference for planning your own trip.

Landscape and Townscape

The Paseo Marítimo offers views of Almedina’s historic old town. The Fuente de Almedina consists of three basins supplied by four water spouts from two springs. The Fuente del Cañaveral is located in the centre of Almedina; its salty water was probably used mainly to irrigate vegetable gardens. At the water tank on the Calar de Cruces, there is a viewpoint facing north with views of Dehesilla’s traditional irrigated fields.
