Suances between Coast, Nature and History

Suances is one of the eight municipalities of the Costa Quebrada Geopark. The local information brings together coast, trails, nature observation and history, offering different perspectives on the same holiday destination. This means that active pursuits, impressions of the landscape and cultural traces exist side by side, without any single theme fully defining the town.

Coast

Playa de Los Locos is designated as a “Surf Reserve”. Its waves are powerful, consistent and regular; the northeasterly wind that is frequent in spring and summer makes them particularly impressive. Playa de La Concha has the Q quality seal for tourism quality, as well as the ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015 beach management certifications. Thus, the coast brings together a designated beach status, a distinctive wave profile and formal information on quality and management.

Trails

The Ruta Circular Ciclable de Suances is 38 kilometres long and designed for cyclists and hikers. It can be divided into several stages and completed over several days. Another circular route in Suances is 4.2 kilometres long, has a low level of difficulty, and starts and ends at Playa de la Concha. For personal day planning, the routes therefore offer different scales: an extensive circular route with stages and a shorter loop with a fixed connection to the beach. Length, division into stages and level of difficulty are separate characteristics.

Nature

A cycle path runs along the western shore of the Ría San Martín de la Arena de Suances, where waterbirds can be observed. The ecosystem of the Ría San Martín de la Arena occasionally serves as a refuge for migratory birds. The Tarro-Blanco bird observatory is located in Cortiguera, near Vuelta Ostrera. The park at Punta del Dichoso offers excellent views of Suances. The natural features therefore range from a waterside route and a habitat used at certain times to a named observatory and a viewpoint. Those who do not want to spend the day exclusively on the beach will find various ways here to experience the landscape.

History

Suances is considered the ancient Roman “Portus Blendium”. The remains of the coastal defence structures at Punta del Torco date from the 17th century. Cueva de Las Brujas preserves modest traces of rock art. A building in Suances has a Camarín and two side chapels. The town’s history is reflected in different chronological and architectural traces: a Roman designation, military remains, rock art and distinctive architecture each represent their own historical perspective. This makes it possible to distinguish days spent in nature from cultural discoveries.
