Cabuérniga: Historic Cultural Landscape and Architectural Heritage

Nature

Cabuérniga is located in the Autonomous Community of Cantabria, in the middle valley of the Río Saja and in the heart of the Saja-Besaya Nature Reserve. At Valle, the alluvial valley floor widens considerably. The Historic Ensemble of Valle preserves a traditional cultural landscape with houses and gardens in the different parts of the village, meadowland divided by dry-stone walls, as well as pastures and native forests. From Valle, the CA-182 road crosses the Collada de Carmona into the Nansa Valley.

Culture

Valle has been protected as a Historic Ensemble since 2004. The Casa en El Ricote preserves an inscription dating the house to the 18th century. The Iglesia de San Pedro stands on a small hill and overlooks the village of Valle. It contains Baroque altarpieces from the 18th century. The Ayuntamiento–Antigua Cárcel building still preserves prison cells from the 16th century.

The Casa de Don Augusto González Linares has a floor plan and structural design reminiscent of medieval fortified towers. A plaque at the Casa de Don Augusto González Linares commemorates a meeting in 1875 between Augusto González Linares, Francisco Giner de los Ríos, Manuel Ruíz de Quevedo and Nicolás Salmerón; the four are regarded as the founders of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza.

The Casa del Castellano comprises two houses; one of them has a round arch belonging to a former single-storey house from the 16th century. The Hilera de La Fonda consists of three houses of different ages and styles and illustrates the development of the typical Montañés house from the 16th century to the present day. At the Solana, the Casona de los Torales preserves an original carving featuring castanets. Despite its poor state of preservation, the Casona de Rubín de Celis is considered one of the finest examples of Baroque manor houses in Cabuérniga.

On the way

The linear 3.8 km Ruta de las Mieses runs from Sopeña to Renedo through the meadowlands of Valle, Terán and Selores; along the way, you can see grazing livestock and the various historic village ensembles. The route is marked along its entire length.

Annual cycle

La Campaná is celebrated in Valle on the second Sunday in October and accompanies the autumn livestock drive from the mountain pastures at the end of summer. The Feria de Valle takes place in Valle de Cabuérniga on 22 October and includes cattle, horses, sheep and goats.
