Selores – historic houses, springs and trails

Selores was laid out as a “pueblo caminero” and comprises the districts of La Mahilla, La Curraliega, La Bolera and La Fuente.

Culture

In the Barrio de la Fuente, La Casería is located on the Camino Real. Historically, it bears the name “Mayorazgo de la Fuente” and combines a main house built in 1690 with a later extension dating from around 1730, the Casa de la Viuda. Next to La Casería is the so-called «estancia del peregrino».

The Casona de los Cabeza also bears the name Mayorazgo de la Fuente. It has three arches that are now glazed, a broad solana between windbreak walls, and a striking coat of arms featuring the arms of Cabeza, Terán, Mier and González.

El Santuco de Selores was built in 1786; its Asubiadero consists of carefully worked stone. As a Humilladero, El Santuco preserves a polychrome stone figure and is one of the few Humilladeros in the region with such a preserved figure. The Iglesia de San Vicente Mártir was built in 1910 and has a Latin-cross floor plan. The Casas de las Indianas in the Barrio de la Fuente feature 19th-century architecture with colonial influence.

Landscape

The Fuentona de Selores is a spring beside the village square. At the Fuentona, you can rest beside the spring in the cool shade. The approach to Selores follows the Arroyo Verdero and is surrounded by vegetation. The valley contains the Mieses, bordered by dry-stone walls; on the slopes are Seles and pastureland, while at higher elevations are the Brañas, used for extensive grazing.

Trails

The Ruta de las Mieses begins and ends in the districts of Selores and Sopeña. It is signposted along its entire length with marker posts; there are also information panels in Spanish, English and Braille. Four signposts for the Ruta de las Mieses stand in Selores. A signposted route leads to the Callejón de los Lobos. The Callejón de los Lobos is an old structure used for wolf hunting.

When planning a visit, the historic buildings and religious landmarks in Selores can be considered separately from the valley’s landscape areas and the signposted trails. The Fuentona marks a distinct point beside the village square, while the Ruta de las Mieses, with its signposts and the Callejón de los Lobos, highlights different connections between the trails and locations. At the Fuentona, lingering beside the spring in the cool shade is the main focus; on the trails, by contrast, orientation and being on the move take priority.
