La Cueva: Churches, Vía Verde and Pisueña Riparian Forest

La Cueva is one of the four settlements of Castañeda: Socobio, Villabañez, La Cueva and Pomaluengo. The Colegiata de Santa Cruz de Castañeda is located in Socobio. For visitors, sacred architecture, a feast day and trails in the surrounding area are clearly distinguishable themes found alongside one another in La Cueva.

Culture and Architecture

The Iglesia de San Sebastián is located in the La Mora area, next to the La Cueva cemetery. It has a rectangular floor plan and two porticoes on its façades. Its main façade is made of ashlar stone; it is topped by a bell gable with two openings.

The Ermita de San Pelayo displays a different division of materials: its walls consist of rubble masonry, while the building corners and the surrounds of the doors and windows are made of ashlar stone. The building comprises a single nave, has a pitched roof and features a bell gable.

The Ermita de San José is located about 50 metres from the La Cueva cemetery. It consists of rubble masonry; ashlar stone is found on its southern façade and on the bell gable.

The Ermita de San Pelayo is located along a trail leading to the Sierra de Valle and Monte Carceña.

The San Sebastián festival takes place in La Cueva on 20 January.

Trails and Nature

A section of the Vía Verde del Pas connects La Cueva with Pomaluengo. The section of the Vía Verde del Pas between La Cueva and Pomaluengo offers an alternative return from the riverside route via a bridge over the A8.

Nearby, the Senda Fluvial del Pisueña is an easy out-and-back route of about 1.5 kilometres, suitable for families, older people and other day-trippers.
