Parbayón: Bike Park, Streams and History

The municipal bike park in Parbayón can be used for mountain biking and BMX. The facility covers 800 square metres and features two opposing berms, two 180-degree turns and four jump lines.

Landscape and Water

Parbayón is located 12 km from Santander and lies at kilometre 140 of the N-632 between Santander and Burgos. Permanently green meadows stretch across the Vega and the less steep areas. The Parbayón diapir is clearly visible at the former gypsum extraction site.

The Carrimont is a local stream that originates in Parbayón and shortly afterwards flows into the Pas at Renedo. A route through Parbayón passes through landscapes with plains and streams and includes the riparian ecosystem as well as the Parbayón stream. According to P. Madoz, the La Mina stream is also called Parbayón and flows into the Ría de Solía.

The landscape and watercourse features include plains, streams and a riparian ecosystem.

Activities

The redesigned play area in Parbayón includes an outdoor area and a covered area with renewed play equipment, as well as a large zip line. A covered children's playground is located near the Consultorio de Parbayón.

The facilities mentioned differ clearly from one another: the bike park focuses on mountain biking and BMX, while the two play areas feature renewed play equipment, a zip line and a covered play area, respectively. The landscape and watercourses form another thematic area.

History and Culture

A route through Parbayón highlights several well-preserved washhouses, passes a historic RENFE tunnel and includes the church of Nuestra Señora de Cianca y San Lorenzo as well as the Ermita de San Francisco de Asís.

A branch of the Roman Via Agrippa ran through Cianea, Parbayón, Renedo, Vioño and Zurita to Barreda. The church of San Lorenzo in Parbayón was restored this year. The Fiestas de San Lorenzo 2026 will take place from 7 to 14 August and include sporting, gastronomic, religious, family and musical activities.

The historical span ranges from the Roman Via Agrippa and the documented history of the locality to the preserved buildings along the route. The washhouses, the historic RENFE tunnel, the churches and the Ermita stand alongside one another as different sites reflecting the cultural and local history.

In the 19th century, the two mills were the only industry in the village of Parbayón. The first documented mention of Parbayón dates back to 816.
