Culture and history
The present-day Iglesia de San Jorge was built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries; construction work on the church is dated to 1585–1589 and work on the tower to 1655.
During the restoration of the main altarpiece of the Iglesia de San Jorge in 1995, a painting of Saint George on six interconnected walnut panels was discovered behind the altarpiece niche.
The rediscovered painting depicts Saint George in armour on a white horse, killing a dragon; a princess watches him from in front of a castle protecting a city.
The Ermita de Santa Eulalia is a simple 17th-century religious building; records of it exist from the early Middle Ages.
The Palacio de Miranda was the seat of an earlier municipal council.
The Palacio de Miranda includes a house dating from before 1682 and a tower dating from before 1739.
The Puente de Búmbaro is a medieval bridge from the 16th century that crosses the Pisueña River and has three semicircular arches.
The Puente de Búmbaro is included in the General Inventory of the Cultural Heritage of Cantabria.
Nature
Part of the Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno lies within the municipality of Penagos, while the park also extends across other municipalities.
The karst landscape of Cabárceno was formed by earlier mining activities and is considered valuable geological heritage.
The Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno covers 750 hectares and has 20 kilometres of roads.
The park’s area and road length give it a different spatial scale from the historic buildings and the short walk through the districts.
Getting around
The Astillero–Penagos section of the Camino Natural Vía Verde del Pas is suitable for people with reduced mobility.
The Vía Verde del Pas begins in the Valles Pasiegos region within the municipality of Penagos and offers walks, cycling tours, as well as rides on inline skates and scooters; the route is also suitable for families with children.
For planning purposes, the various means of transport can be compared according to the activity and who is accompanying you.
The cultural heritage of the municipal capital can be explored in Penagos’s districts on a short walk along the road; the Palacio de Miranda stands out in particular.
