Landscape and Nature

The protected Las Lagunetas landscape area also includes parts of La Matanza de Acentejo. Los Nateros is a cultural landscape characterised by agricultural terraces, vineyards, chestnut trees and pine trees. El Montillo is a nature and landscape reserve covering approximately 60,000 m², with a fayal-brezal forest. It is home to one of the last habitats of the protected beetle subspecies Pimelia radula radula.

Trails and Excursions

Numerous paths run through the Barranco de Acentejo, which was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) protected site in 2007; sections with lush vegetation can be crossed on foot. Los Nateros has two circular routes with soft surfaces for walking or outdoor exercise. The hiking trail on Montaña La Bandera has been restored. El Montillo offers paths as well as areas for play, leisure and outdoor recreation. The SL-TF 26 hiking trail (Los Nateros–La Vica–Los Nateros) is officially approved within the municipality of La Matanza de Acentejo.

For cycling tours, the BC-1 Ruta Norte mountain-bike route is connected to the rural centre of Los Nateros via side roads. The 22-kilometre circular route Las Calderetas–Lagunetas–Gaitero passes through La Vica. La Vica is also a recreational area suitable for picnics and excursions. The Paseo Peatonal along the TF-5 service road includes coastal viewpoints. The PR TF 25.3 hiking trail connects Las Lagunetas and Los Nateros. The various trail types and lengths help you mentally distinguish between active and quieter days.

Culture and History

The cultural history includes the Ermita de San Antonio Abad, considered one of Tenerife’s oldest hermitages. It houses an image of Saint Anthony, which is believed to have been the first image of the saint to reach the island of Tenerife after the conquest. One of the island’s most traditional pilgrimages is dedicated to San Antonio Abad and begins at the old Ermita de San Antonio Abad. The Parroquia de El Salvador was built in the 20th century on the site of an older temple, which was burned down by a group of anarchists in July 1936.

Local Produce

The Mercadillo del Agricultor sells fruit, vegetables, cheese, wine, handicrafts and baked goods produced in La Matanza and the Comarca de Acentejo.
