Tegueste: Nature, Trails and Culture
Tegueste is part of the Anaga Massif, which has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2015 and encompasses valuable natural areas with monteverde and laurel forest. The PR-TF-12 Cruz del Carmen–Bajamar hiking trail runs through the town; it has been officially approved by the Cabildo of Tenerife.
Nature
The Camino de Los Laureles is a tree-lined path in Tegueste that preserves older monteverde plant species, including laurel, mocán and barbusano. There is also a weekly route through the historic centre of Tegueste. The PR TF 12.1 trail is a branch of the PR TF 12 hiking trail leading to Tegueste. Tegueste offers an annual programme of guided routes for local residents and visitors. The route options differ in terms of course, pace and accompaniment; when planning your own visit, you can consider these features separately. The PR-TF-12 connects the aforementioned starting and ending points via Tegueste, while the PR TF 12.1 branch places the town as a separate section of the trail network. Together with the tour of the historic centre and the annual guided routes, this creates different ways of exploring the landscape and local history without equating the options in terms of content.
Culture and History
La Librea de Tegueste was classified by the Government of the Canary Islands in 2007 as a Bien de Interés Cultural with local scope. The tradition depicted shows a symbolic struggle between good and evil as part of a battle set in the period of the Ancien Régime. The carreteros work intensively for several months on the motifs and on side panels made of grain. A permanently inhabited Indigenous settlement site now provides information about the area’s former inhabitants.
The Casa Los Zamorano Interpretation Centre manages permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as a collection of objects and documents. For group visits to Casa Los Zamorano outside regular opening hours, prior arrangements by telephone or email are required on every day of the week.
