La Concepción: Chapel, History and Festivals

After a period of decay, the Ermita was restored and blessed in 1918. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción is the only surviving building of the former estate.

History

The local history dates back to the period of the Heredamiento de Tijoco. In 1558, Antonio de Castro had a second mill facility built there. This contributed to the emergence of the hamlet or district of La Concepción.

Below the Ermita de la Concepción lies the former site of the sugar cane mill, which is still known as El Ingenio. The historic local structure also includes the Era de la Concepción, a circular threshing floor with a diameter of around twelve metres. It lies between residential buildings and serves as an inner courtyard; local residents are said to have used it.

Landscape

In the wider regional area around La Concepción, the protected landscape area of Barranco de Erques features a rugged landscape. Its geomorphological structure is representative of Tenerife's geology.

Local Life

In the area around La Concepción, Quesería Montesdeoca offers guided visits to its farm in the mid-altitude areas of Adeje, where it keeps more than 1,000 goats. Visitors can observe traditional cheesemaking there and taste cheese.

At the end of September, La Concepción holds a celebration commemorating Our Lady of La Concepción. As part of this celebration, the festival committee organises a series of public gatherings. La Concepción also participates in the Adeje tradition of Cruz de Mayo.

Transport

Bus routes 448 and 449 connect Adeje Casco with La Caleta and improve public transport connections to La Concepción.
