A striking introduction to Fasnia is the Ruta Circular de La Zarza: it begins in the district of La Zarza and connects the hamlets of La Zarza, La Sombrera and Sabina Alta.

The Ruta Circular de La Zarza passes historic sites and springs associated with the water supply. These include the Naciente de La Zarza, which once supplied the local residents with water.

Along the route, there are also traditional rural buildings and agricultural terraces built with volcanic rock such as Tosca and Jable.

Paths and Culture

The linear hiking trail SL-TF 263 Fasnia–El Escobonal can begin at the ruins of the 17th-century Ermita de San Joaquín or behind the Iglesia de San Joaquín in the centre of Fasnia and end at the Plaza de la Iglesia in El Escobonal; because of its linear course, the starting point and destination can be reversed.

The trail partly follows the old Camino Real, whose original paving has been preserved in some places. Length, route and terrain provide different points of reference for comparing the described paths according to your preferred pace for the day.

The Museo Vieja Escuela La Zarza dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and preserves furnishings representative of that period. Another traditional craft passed down through the generations is traditional bobbin lace, or Calado lacework, which is still passed from mothers to daughters in some households in Fasnia.

Volcanic Landscape and Nature

The SL-TF 263 crosses agricultural mid-altitude areas with cultivated land, small settlements, paved sections and dirt tracks, offering a characteristic cultural landscape of the region.

The Volcán de Fasnia Route is a moderately difficult, non-homologated linear trail measuring 7.2 kilometres, with a stated duration of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes and 247 metres of ascent and descent respectively.

It passes old volcanic cones and circles the black volcanic cones formed by the eruption known as Volcán de Fasnia in January 1705. The route runs through Teide National Park.

The Acantilado de La Hondura is designated as a site of scientific interest. It consists of an accumulation of lava flows and pyroclasts, is 30 metres high and 2,500 metres long, and features small coves and ravines.

The Barranco de Fasnia y Güímar contains pine forests, tabaibal vegetation and rocky vegetation, including the endemic and endangered Cerrajón (Sonchus gummifer).

From the centre of Fasnia, the Barranco de Fasnia y Güímar can be reached via the TF-28 towards Güímar; about 1 kilometre from the town centre, the road crosses the ravine and reaches the starting point.

Coast

Playa de Las Eras has a large car park; nearby, there is a small seafront promenade for walks along the coast.
