La Guancha: Lava Cove, Old Streets and Crafts

La Guancha is home to Charco del Viento, a natural area where two lava arms form a small natural cove and protect the water from the strong surf of the surrounding area. At Charco del Viento, you can snorkel in calm, crystal-clear water; fishing is also practised in the sheltered waters. Culture

The Barrio de Santa Catalina is the oldest settlement centre in La Guancha. In the town centre, there is a network of narrow, old streets; some of them are cobbled, including El Sol, Juan Luis Reyes, Nueva and El Calvario. The Centro Cultural Unión y Fraternidad, also known as the “Casino de La Guancha”, has a façade with typical Canarian balconies and offers numerous cultural and entertainment events throughout the year. The Iglesia Dulce Nombre de Jesús has origins dating back to 1579.

The Centro de Artesanía is open to the public; opening hours are 09:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 19:00. Examples of pottery, raffia work, basketry, cutwork embroidery, weaving and embroidery are made and exhibited there. Traditional, everyday and carnival clothing is also made and exhibited there.

Local Produce and Wine

At weekends, the Mercado del Agricultor welcomes visitors from other municipalities. It offers produce grown in La Guancha, such as Papa bonita potatoes, bananas, peaches, grapes, papayas, maize and garden vegetables. The Consejo Regulador Ycoden Daute Isora has tasting rooms and regularly organises wine-related specialist days and courses.

Nature

From the Mirador El Topete, you can see Mount Teide and the north of Tenerife. The Parque Recreativo El Pinalete is a family recreation area in La Guancha’s pine forest; it has barbecue areas, tables with benches and drinking water.

Four cycling routes start from Casa de la Pradera. The Casa de la Pradera–Icod el Alto–Casa de la Pradera circular route leads to the areas known as Fuente de el Barco and Los Campeches. Several TITSA bus routes connect La Guancha with the north of Tenerife and the metropolitan area. The cycling routes and bus services represent different ways of exploring the town and its surroundings: one through named routes and areas, the other through public transport connections.
