El Río: Trails, Rock and Culture

In El Río, the “Circular Villa de Arico - El Río” trail passes through more open landscapes and natural areas extending from the edge of Las Cañadas in the upper section down to the lower-lying coastline. The trail is approximately 12 km long. A somewhat easier route leads from Plaza de los Condes de Santa María de Abona in Villa de Arico to the hamlet of El Río, following old, well-preserved paved paths.

The Las Majadas–Pasajirón hiking trail is considered particularly interesting in terms of its landscape and natural environment along the course of the ravine. A stream flows year-round along the ravine section of this route, although its flow decreases in summer. Different route lengths and types of activity help you determine the balance between hiking, climbing and culture when planning your day.

Nature

The climbing routes in El Río are generally 25 to 30 metres long; most are technically oriented endurance climbs with individual bouldering sections. The Zona Zero climbing sector comprises around twenty routes. Because of its orientation, it has alternating sunny and shaded areas throughout the day.

Access to the El Río climbing area initially follows the narrow road beside the church for two kilometres, then continues along an unpaved track and a footpath to the reservoir. There is a small car park near a large iron gate.

Culture

A masonry bridge over the Barranco de El Río has three semicircular arch openings resting on the rock formations of the steep gorge. Historical traces also include the Lavaderos de El Río, part of a restored historic water infrastructure made from local Chasnera stone, comprising a water basin, several channels, a water collection point and washing areas. The site is open to the public.

The Church of San Bartolomé in El Río houses a fully executed polychrome sculpture of the patron saint dating from 1691, created by the woodcarver Domingo de Campos. It also contains a depiction of San Juan Bautista from the 17th century. Extension work on the Church of San Bartolomé in El Río was completed in 1754.

The celebration of San Bartolomé in the El Río district was established in 1774 and held on 24 August. During the festivities for Nuestra Señora de la O in the El Río district, a procession travelled along Calle San Bartolomé. The programme of festivities in honour of San Bartolomé included a discussion and tasting of wines with the Abona designation of origin, as well as a “Tapas y Vinos” event. The celebration of Nuestra Señora de la O was established in 1778 and held on 18 December. Its programme included a “Tapas y Vinos” event featuring products from the region.
